Recent advances in understanding bile duct remodeling and fibrosis

Abstract: Cholestatic liver disease encompasses a detrimental group of diseases that are non-discriminatory in nature. These diseases occur over every age range from infancy (biliary atresia) to geriatrics (hepatitis). They also cover both genders in the form of primary sclerosing cholangitis in men and primary biliary cholangitis in women. Oftentimes, owing to the disease progression and extensive scarring, the treatment of last resort becomes a liver transplant. In this review, we will briefly discuss and explore new … Show more

“…The origin of the DR in liver pathology and the determinant factor that initiates the regenerative process remain unclear 15,16 . Recent findings have shown that progenitor stem‐like cells play a crucial role in biliary epithelium restoration and hepatocyte regeneration 40,41 . As progenitor cells express unique regenerative qualities and seem to be associated with liver tissue fibrosis, they have become an interesting target for the development of novel therapeutic options to tackle biliary injury 42,43 .…”

“…Intra-operative sonography can provide precise information on duct size and peripheral dilatation as early as 4 h after biliary obstruction, while intra-hepatic bile duct dilatation after five days. 20,[22][23][24][25] This was carried out in the current study with pigs prior to and following graft implant surgery which the transducer being placed directly on the hepatic surface. 26,27 The graft did not change the diameter of the CBD an average of 2.9 mm considered a normal size and AP on average of 96.8 mm.…”
