Recent Advances in Toxoplasma gondii Immunotherapeutics

Abstract: Toxoplasmosis is an opportunistic infection caused by the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. T. gondii is widespread globally and causes severe diseases in individuals with impaired immune defences as well as congenitally infected infants. The high prevalence rate in some parts of the world such as South America and Africa, coupled with the current drug treatments that trigger hypersensitivity reactions, makes the development of immunotherapeutics intervention a highly important research priority. Immunothe… Show more

“…Current research on developing a human or animal Toxoplasma vaccine has been an ongoing but incredibly challenging effort (104). Recent advances in immunotherapeutics designed to boost the host response to the parasite or to parasite antigens may aid effective multispecies vaccine development, ideally resulting in disease prevention or reduction and interruption of transmission (105). Immunomodulators in combination with anti-Toxoplasma compounds are another area of future promise (106).…”

“…T. gondii causes toxoplasmosis in humans and many domestic and wildlife animals, with great economic impact especially in sheep but also in many other animal species (1). Human toxoplasmosis causes serious pathology in immune-suppressed individuals.…”

“…It has been known that treatment when administered as soon as seroconversion is detected significantly minimizes the severity of fetal lesions after transmission has occurred [11,16]. The recently commercialized LDBIO Toxo II IgGÂź test has been shown to be very reliable in the confirmation of low titers of IgG or titers close to the cut-off of the routine quantitative techniques [12].…”
