Recent Advances in the Use of Secondary Compounds for the Control of Animal Parasites

Abstract

The unstoppable advance of drug-resistant parasite populations of different animal species has impulse a worldwide search for parasite control alternatives. One of the alternatives is based on the rational use of ´lant secondary compounds (PSC).In the framework of the 100th anniversary (celebrated in 2022) of the Universidad Autonoma de Yucatan, Mexico, a three-day International Symposium was held to share the most recent findings on the use of PSC for the control of parasites in different animal species.This meeting was also intended to celebrate the work on the nutrition-parasite interactions of Dr. Hervé Hoste, from INRAe France, along with his productive and successful career which has promoted the search for plant secondary compounds in different parts of the world.Researchers were invited to submit a review based on their presentation given at the Symposium. Reviews received were subjected to the usual peer review process. From those, four "Invited reviews" are contained in this issue: American Consortium for Small Ruminant Parasite Control investigations on the use of plant secondary compounds of Sericea lespedeza for the control of sheep and goat parasites (Terrill, 2024) Secondary compounds plants and their effect against the Varroa destructor mite (Reyna-Fuentes et al., 2024). Advances in the use of eight tropical plants for the control of ticks and gastrointestinal nematodes in bovines, equines, and canines (Flota-Burgos et al., 2024). Research on chemical compounds from edible mushrooms for the control of gastrointestinal nematodes and phytoparasites (Aguilar Marcelino et al., 2024).The editorial work related to these reviews was performed by the guest editors.
