Recent advances in the diagnosis of dermatophytosis

Abstract: Dermatophytosis is a disease of global significance caused by pathogenic keratinolytic fungi called dermatophytes in both animals and humans. The recent taxonomy of dermatophytes classifies them into six pathogenic genera, namely Microsporum, Trichophyton, Epidermophyton, Nannizzia, Lophophyton and Arthroderma. It is because of the delayed diagnostic nature and low accuracy of dermatophyte detection by conventional methods that paved the path for the evolution of molecular diagnostic techniques, which provide … Show more

“…The conventional methods most commonly used in mycology laboratories for the diagnosis of keratinophilic fungi are based on colony characteristics, microscopic morphology [48], growth requirements, and the results of physiological and biochemical tests. Morphological parameters are the colony pattern, pigmentation, and growth rate.…”

“…Considering the enormous number of taxonomic differences between dermatophytes that can be tested and the importance of species-level identification, the "gold standard" to use for routine mycological identification has still become the topic of a debate, and no uniform position of microbiologists has been developed [8,12,13]. Nonetheless, the advent of molecular methods in mycology facilitates identification of dermatophytes to the species level in a rapid and accurate manner [14][15][16].…”
