Recent Advances in Portable and Handheld NIR Spectrometers and Applications in Milk, Cheese and Dairy Powders

Abstract: Quality and safety monitoring in the dairy industry is required to ensure products meet a high-standard based on legislation and customer requirements. The need for non-destructive, low-cost and user-friendly process analytical technologies, targeted at operators (as the end-users) for routine product inspections is increasing. In recent years, the development and advances in sensing technologies have led to miniaturisation of near infrared (NIR) spectrometers to a new era. The new generation of miniaturised N… Show more

“…In past decades, complicated analysis methods in several branches have been allowed with modern nondestructive analytical methods [ 28 , 29 ]. In this study, five different spectroscopic methods, including benchtop FT-IR, NIR, and Raman spectrometers and portable NIR and Raman spectrometers combined with PLSR, were investigated to analyze the total curcuminoid content in turmeric samples.…”

“…Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) is widely used as a characterization tool in pharmacology and materials science. Extended InGaAs p-i-n detectors with a 2.6 µm wavelength cutoff are popular in Near-Infrared (NIR) instruments [1][2][3][4] used in the medical, food and dairy industry. The FTIR instrument works by Fourier transforming the detected optical signal to obtain the infrared spectrum.…”
