Recent advances in optical dynamic meta-holography

Abstract: Holography, with the capability of recording and reconstructing wavefronts of light, has emerged as an ideal approach for future deep-immersive naked-eye display. However, the shortcomings (e.g., small field of view, twin imaging, multiple orders of diffraction) of traditional dynamic holographic devices bring many challenges to their practical applications. Metasurfaces, planar artificial materials composed of subwavelength unit cells, have shown great potential in light field manipulation, which is useful fo… Show more

“…On the other side, low-Q antennas represent a true change of paradigm with respect to both guided structures and photonic crystals. Their presently lower SHG efficiency is largely counterbalanced by intriguing possibilities ranging from the dynamic tunability of individual meta-atom emission 82,155,157,158 , pulse shaping 159 , broadband parametric devices 96 , nonlinear imaging 107 , wavefront shaping 108 and meta-holography 112,160,161 . Their rapid development is currently underpinned by an ongoing progress in nanofabrication, new promising nonlinear materials like TMDCs, and both analytical 69,162 and numerical 67 methods to model nonlinear generation in leaky cavities.…”

“…They significantly relax the requirement of the complicated fabrication process and possess many attractive features such as lower loss, lighter weight, and a higher degree of integration. [1][2][3] With properly tailoring and arranging the unit cells of the metasurfaces, many novel planar devices have been created from optical to microwave wavelengths, including polarization conversion, [4] achromatic focusing lenses, [5,6] spin and orbital angular momentum, [7,8] high gain antennas, [9,10] holograms, [11,12] vortex beam generators, [13,14] microwave absorbers, [15,16] and so on.…”

“…However, because metasurfaces with discontinuous phase distributions are not sensitive to changes in ambient refractive index, most metadevices are static and have a single function. A dynamically tunable metasurface is more flexible and can further expand the application of metasurface functional devices [8][9][10].…”
