Recent advances in nonpolar and polar organic monoliths for HPLC and CEC

Abstract: This article is aimed at providing a review of the progress made in the field over the period 2011 to present in order to expand in parts on two previous reviews (S. Karenga and Z. El Rassi, Electrophoresis, 2011, 32, 90-104; D. Gunasena and Z. El Rassi, Electrophoresis, 2012, 33, 251-261). In brief, this review article describes progress made in nonpolar and polar monoliths used in reversed phase HPLC and CEC (RPC/RP-CEC) and in hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography/CEC (HILIC/HI-CEC), respectively. “…CEC with monolithic columns has progressed enormously over the last 15 years, and the field has been summarized in typical reviews . This has been facilitated by the many sound features of monoliths including, and not limited to, ease of fabrication, good permeability, fast mass transfer, high stability, ease of modification, and the ability to optimize monolith’ porosity.…”

“…As an alternative route for monolithic column preparation, postpolymerization functionalization of precursor monoliths allows the introduction of various kinds of ligands onto the monolithic surface starting from one generic template monolith. Typical review articles summarizing some of the most recent post polymerization modification is given in . It should be mentioned that postpolymerization modification date back to the work published by Ericson et al.…”
