Recent Advances in Minimally Invasive Esophagectomy

Abstract: The treatment of esophageal cancer has become more effective due to advances in surgical techniques, multidisciplinary approach, appropriate use of neoadjuvant therapy and perioperative care at centers of excellence in esophageal surgery. Esophagectomy is one of the most complicated and demanding procedures among all gastrointestinal surgeries with a very long learning curve in which excellence can only be achieved through improvement during all the surgical career. The results of esophagectomy are related not… Show more

“…Introduction of minimally invasive techniques (MIT) to oesophageal surgery raised the question of whether it should be the method of choice (29)(30)(31). Minimally invasive procedures reduce operative trauma, facilitates less postoperative pain and shorter lengths of stay (11,32,33). The biggest available meta-analysis by Yibulayin et al consisting 57 studies including 15,790 patients proved the superiority of minimally invasive esophagectomy over an open approach in terms of post-operative complications and mortality (34).…”

“…The treatment of esophageal cancer has become more effective due to advances in surgical techniques, multidisciplinary approaches, and the appropriate use of neoadjuvant therapy at centers of excellence in esophageal surgery. 13 Esophageal cancer with liver cancer is rare. Therefore, the combination of immunotherapy with other treatment modalities, such as TACE, surgery, particle therapy, and timing of combined treatment modalities, is being actively explored to maximize the therapeutic benefits of immunotherapy.…”

“…Unlike the rest of the digestive tract, the esophageal mucosa being a non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium is a good material for anastomosis. The anastomosis must be wide enough to prevent anastomotic stenosis following the healing process (40).…”
