Recent advances in intestinal lymphomas

Abstract: A large variety of lymphoma types may develop as primary intestinal neoplasms in the small intestines or, less often, in the colorectum. Among these are a few entities such as enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma or immunoproliferative small intestinal disease that, essentially, do not arise elsewhere than in the gastrointestinal tract. In most instances the primary intestinal lymphomas belong to entities that also occur in lymph nodes or other mucosal sites, and may show some peculiar features. In the case … Show more

“…The three major entities comprising the spectrum of NK malignancy are NK-cell enteropathy, extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma (ENTL)-nasal type and aggressive NK-cell lymphoma 16 17. NK-cell enteropathy, a clinically indolent disorder characterised by a self-limiting lymphoproliferation in the GI tract, is inconsistent with the morphology and aggressive features of the cells characterised in this case 15. NK-cell enteropathies are routinely identified in the absence of EBV infection 17.…”

“…All primary GI lymphomas are non-Hodgkin lymphomas and, of these, nearly half are diffuse large B-cell lymphomas with marginal zone, mantle cell and follicular lymphoma frequently identified as well 10 13. The most commonly identified T-cell phenotype is the enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma, a rare but well-characterised disease of the small intestine 14 15…”

“…As reported, the most common subtype of primary intestinal lymphoma is diffuse large B-cell lymphoma and extra-nodal marginal zone lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT lymphoma) [1012]. Among the T-cell lymphomas of GI tract, peripheral T-cell lymphomas (PTCL), enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma (EATL) and NK/T-cell lymphoma (NK/TL) are the common subtypes [12, 13]. In a retrospective Korean study, 42 primary GI T-cell lymphomas were assessed out of which 17 cases are located in small intestine.…”
