Recent Advances in Gadolinium Based Contrast Agents for Bioimaging Applications

Abstract: Gadolinium (Gd) based contrast agents (CAs) (Gd-CAs) represent one of the most advanced developments in the application of Gd for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Current challenges with existing CAs generated an urgent requirement to develop multimodal CAs with good biocompatibility, low toxicity, and prolonged circulation time. This review discussed the Gd-CAs used in bioimaging applications, addressing their advantages and limitations. Future research is required to establish the safety, efficacy and thera… Show more

“…Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of the commonly used clinical diagnostic tools which produces multiplanar and true 3D cross section images of the region of interest in a patient’s body [ 106–108 ]. The technique primarily relies on the water present inside the body, in and around the tissues and organs to produce a contrasted image of a cross-section of that particular organ/tissue [ 109 ].…”

“…66 Multiple varieties of gadolinium-based nanoparticles have been developed with different functionalities such as enhanced targeting and retention at the target site, better clearance, and higher signal. 67 Apart from gadolinium, other ions such as Mn 2+ and Fe 3+ have also been used as T1 contrast agents. 68,69 Ferromagnetic or superparamagnetic iron-oxide-based nanoparticles have been used as T2 MRI contrast agents for over three decades.…”

“… 28 In particular, gadolinium (Gd)-based contrast agents have attracted substantial attention as T1-weighted MRI contrast agents and have been widely used in clinical practice. 29 In addition to traditional MRI, photoacoustic imaging (PA), as a rapidly evolving imaging technology, has great application potential in biomedical field due to its high contrast and high spatial resolution. 30 At the same time, the development of nanotechnology has made a significant contribution to the development of nanoparticle-based contrast agents for PA imaging.…”
