“…However, the amounts of P extracted by water were lower than that desorbed by EUF at 20°C (P (50 + 200) ). These results agree with those of Nemeth (1985) and Simard and Tran (1993). Phosphorus extracted by Mehlich 3, the currently recommended method in the province of Quebec, was significantly related to each fraction desorbed by EUF (0.52 < r < 0.76).…”

“…For all sites and treatments, P (50 + 200) was 6.9 mg P kg -1 whereas water-soluble P was 1.3 mg P kg -1 ( Table 2). The higher amount of P desorbed by EUF than extracted with water was not surprising since EUF at 20°C recovers phosphate ions in the soil solution and a fraction of the desorbable P in weakly acidic to neutral soils (Nemeth 1985). The amount of soil-P desorbed by EUF at 400 V and 80°C was generally lower than the amount of P desorbed by the AEMs and by 0.5 M NaHCO 3 except at Laverlochere.…”

“…Diverse methodologies based on in situ and laboratorial incubations, chemical extractions and electro-ultrafiltrations have been made to improve the accuracy of N recommendation programs (Stanford and Smith, 1972;Németh, 1985;Gianello and Bremner, 1986;Bhogal et al, 1999) The greatest difficulty in N advisory systems is to quantify the rate and time at which the native soil organic matter release its N to the crops. When organic substrates are added to the soil the problem increases.…”

“…The EUF technique has been used as an alternative to chemical extractants to describe the potentially available, reserve K (Nemeth 1979;Ziadi et al 2001) and to study the kinetics of nutrient release from soils (Nemeth 1985;Simard et al 1992). Mengel and Uhlenbecker (1993) used EUF to measure the K release rate and to evaluate its availability to ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.).…”
