. Soil-available phosphorus as evaluated by desorption techniques and chemical extractions. Can. J. Soil Sci. 81: 167-174. The P-supplying power of the fine-textured soils from Abitibi-Temiscaming (Quebec, Canada) has never been investigated. Anion exchange membranes (AEM), the electro-ultrafiltration (EUF) technique and chemical extractions were used to describe their P status. Phosphorus was desorbed from four soils that had received 52.4 kg P ha -1 yr -1 from 1994 to 1996 and from unfertilized soils. The cumulative amount of P desorbed in 75 min by EUF from unfertilized soils varied from 10 to 69 mg P kg -1 . Averaged over all sites and treatments, the amount of soil P extracted by different methods ranged from 1.0 to 18.9 mg P kg -1 . The cumulative grass P uptake was significantly related to P desorbed by all methods (0.39 < r < 0.84). A close relationship between grass P uptake and P AEMs indicated the adequacy of the AEMs to determine plant-available P in Abitibi-Temiscaming soils. A high degree of linearity (0.97 < R 2 < 0.99) of the EUF-P desorption curves at 200 V and 20°C with time was obtained. This indicates that soils have a high capacity to buffer removal of P from soil solution with reserve P. The EUF technique has shown that these soils hold very large inorganic P reserves and this may explain the lack of grass response to P fertilizers.Key words: Anion exchange membranes, grass-P uptake, P-desorption, Mehlich3-P, Olsen-P.Ziadi, N., Simard, R. La capacité de sols à texture fine de l'Abitibi-Témiscamingue (Québec, Canada) à fournir le P n'a jamais été documentée. Les techniques des membranes d'échange anionique (AEMs), d'Électro-ultrafiltration (EUF) et certaines extractions chimiques ont été utilisées à cette fin. Le P désorbé a été caractérisé dans quatre sols ayant reçu 52,4 kg Pha -1 an -1 de 1994 à 1996 et quatre témoins. La quantité cumulative de P désor-bé des témoins non fertilisés par EUF durant 75 min a varié entre 10 et 69 mg P kg -1 . Les teneurs moyennes du sol en P extrait par les différentes méthodes varie de 1,0 à 18,9 mg P kg -1 . Le prélèvement cumulatif du P par les fourrages était significativement relié ( 0,39 < r < 0,84) aux quantités de P du sol désorbé par toutes les méthodes. La relation étroite entre le prélèvement du P et le P extrait par les membranes d'échange anionique indique l'efficacité de cette méthode à quantifier la disponibilité du P pour les fourrages produits sur les sols à texture fine de l'Abitibi-Témiscamingue. Des degrés de linéarité élevés (0,97 < R 2 < 0,99) entre le P désorbé à 200 V et 20°C par EUF et le temps de désorption ont été obtenus. The current increase in the organic agriculture sector has created a new market for fertilisers approved for organic farming. Off-farm N sources for organic farming are scarce considering the restriction on the use of chemical fertilisers. Thus, when some commercial products are allowed for organic agriculture, commercial opportunities became available. In this study we compare the behaviour of Vegethumus (Veg) and Phenix (Phe), which are two manures allowed for organic farming, with several other manures, ammonium nitrate (AN) and control treatments. A three year field trial and a pot experiment were carried out in order to estimate dry matter yield, N uptake, and N nutritional status of the crops, as well as soil N availability by using anion exchange membranes inserted into the soil. Apparent N recoveries in the field trial were 6.3 % and 58.2 % in Veg and AN plots, respectively, after the application of 380 kg N/ha in the previous 5 growing seasons. In the pot experiment the ANR of Veg and Phe were -5.0 % and 13.6 %, respectively, while in AN pots it was 37.1%. The other organic manures used in the pot experiment gave higher apparent N recoveries than Veg and Phe if their C:N ratios or inorganic-N contents were taken into account. This work stresses that the use of manures approved for organic farming must first be carefully considered by farmers, with reference to price and agronomic value.

The rate of K release from the soil solid phase to its solution, especially from its rapidly and slowly exchangeable forms, can affect plant K uptake. The electro-ultrafiltration (EUF) technique was used to kinetically characterize the K release from four soils (Humic Gleysols) from Abitibi-Temiscaming, Quebec, Canada. Potassium was desorbed from soils that received over 166 kg K ha -1 yr -1 from 1994 to 1996. The desorption was carried out for 58 min (4, 4, and every 5 min thereafter for a total of 12 desorptions) at 400 V and 80°C. The amount of K desorbed was between 199 and 342 mg kg -1 . Cumulative K desorption was described by the following six equations: power function, simplified Elovich, extended Elovich, parabolic diffusion, zero-order, and first-order. An incremental first-order equation was also tested. The studied soils have large K supplying capacities as suggested by forage K-uptake and total soil K desorption by EUF. In general, all tested equations adequately described the K release by EUF from the four soils. The incremental first-order equation, used for the first time, described well the soil K release data. The k rate constant from this model was significantly related to forage K uptake (R 2 = 0.58).Results from this study indicate that the investigated soils have large K reserves and that the incremental first-order equation and most of the cumulative ones are suitable for describing the kinetics of the large K release from these fine-textured Gleysols. Les sols à l'étude ont une grande capacité à fournir du K aux plantes tel que suggéré par le prélèvement végétal et le K total désorbé par EUF. En général, tous les modèles étudiés ont décrit adéquatement le K désorbé par EUF. Le modèle incrémentiel de premier ordre, utilisé ici pour la première fois, a décrit précisément la désorption du K. La constante de taux de désorption du K estimé par le modèle incrémentiel est significativement reliée au prélèvement du K par les fourrages (R 2 = 0.58). Les résultats obtenus indiquent que les sols étudiés ont une réserve importante en K et que le modèle incrémentiel de premier ordre ainsi que la majorité des équations cumulatives sont appropriés pour décrire la cinétique de désorption du K de ces Gleysols à texture fine.
