Recent advances in electrochemical determination of anticancer drug 5-fluorouracil

Abstract: Reliable, rapid, highly selective and sensitive analytical methods for the determination of antineoplastic agent 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in human body fluids (blood serum/plasma and urine) are required to improve the chemotherapy regimen to reduce its toxicity and improve efficacy. Nowadays, electrochemical techniques provide a powerful analytical tool for 5-FU detection systems. This comprehensive review covers the advances in the development of electrochemical sensors for the quantitative determination of 5-FU… Show more

“…Research teams have concentrated on creating innovative 5-FU delivery methods that can lessen the cytotoxic effects of anticancer drugs on healthy tissues to overcome the drawbacks of 5-FU and improve its chemotherapeutic efficiency [120]. However, evaluating its concentration in biological samples is necessary to study toxic effects using electrochemistry offers several advantages [121]. The redox reaction of 5-FU is shown in figure 7.…”

“…Adjuvant chemotherapy is indispensable for postoperative recurrence, metastasis, or advanced OSCC and is unsuitable for surgical intervention. 5-Fluorouracil (5FU), as a first-line chemotherapeutic drug, can inhibit the growth of tumor cells by inhibiting thymidylate synthase and integrating its metabolites into RNA and DNA, thus causing DNA damage [ 9 ]. Despite the remarkable efficacy of 5FU in tumor treatment, there is growing clinical evidence that the development of drug resistance severely limits its clinical potential, ultimately leading to tumor recurrence, metastasis, and subsequent treatment failure [ 10 , 11 ].…”

“…Streamlining the time and resources involved in this procedure also plays a crucial role in advancing the development of novel anticancer drugs [ 81 ]. Moreover, in clinical application, this approach could successfully enhance the efficacy and safety of chemotherapy regimens [ 82 ]. Consequently, the first electrochemical sensor capable of accurately measuring amounts of Erdafitinib was created using a modified electrode with NPCS.…”
