Abstract. A bidirectional optical subassembly comprised of a 2.5 Gbps distributed feedback (DFB) laser diode (LD) directly modulated laser transmitter and a 10 Gbps positive intrinsic negative photodiode receiver was developed for an optical network unit of a 10 Gbps passive optical network. Here, a low-cost mini-dual-in-line package was modified to contain whole components of a transmitter and receiver in a single space while satisfying the requirements of 10 Gbps microdevice package standards. The transmitter was fabricated to achieve high optical output power by placing a micro aspheric lens very close to the DFB LD and reducing the thermal resistance between an LD chip and heat sink to bring down the DFB LD chip temperature. As a result, the transmitter output power was 3.5 dB higher than a conventional transistor outline can BOSA due to a high optical coupling efficiency of more than 70% and a low thermal resistance for heat dissipation. The receiver sensitivity was −21 dBm at a bit error rate of 10 −3 and the sensitivity penalty of the receiver due to signal crosstalk was less than 0.3 dB.

The used DFB frequency variation with temperature is 10GHz/°C, similar to other cost-effective DFBs [8], so the ± 0.01°C PID resolution will ensure a wavelength stability around 100MHz. If higher stability is required, the PID controller may be upgraded using a low bandwidth photodiode with an etalon [9].…”

1Gbps full-duplex optical links for 6.25GHz ultra dense WDM frequency slots are demonstrated and optimized for cost-effective metroaccess networks. The OLT-ONU downlinks are based on 1Gbps Nyquist-DPSK using MZM and single-detector heterodyne reception obtaining a sensitivity of −52dBm. The ONU-OLT uplinks are based on 1Gbps NRZ-DPSK by directly phase modulated DFB and also single-detector heterodyne reception obtaining same sensitivity of −52dBm. The power budget of full-duplex link is 43dB. These proposed links can provide service to 16 (32) users at each 100 (200) GHz WDM channel.

Abstract.KM3NeT is a future research infrastructure hosting a network of neutrino telescopes in the abyss of the Mediterranean Sea. The whole data transport over an optical network is based on the Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing technique with optical channels spaced 50 GHz apart and a bit rate of 1.25 Gbps. Over the telescope lifetime, precise temperature control of the laser is required to maintain stability of the central frequency, complying with the recommendations of the International Telecommunication Union. We will report on the characterisation of the tuneable features of the electro-optical transceivers required to compensate for the expected wavelength drift due to aging factors. Preliminary results will be showed.
