Recent Advances in Camel Immunology

Abstract: Camels are domesticated animals that are highly adapted to the extreme desert ecosystem with relatively higher resistance to a wide range of pathogens compared to many other species from the same geographical region. Recently, there has been increased interest in the field of camel immunology. As the progress in the analysis of camel immunoglobulins has previously been covered in many recent reviews, this review intends to summarize published findings related to camel cellular immunology with a focus on the ph… Show more

“…Dromedary camels are known for their well-adaptation to the extreme hot desert environment, with the capability to elevate their body temperature to 41-42 • C during severe hot (2,3,5,6). In addition, camels, in comparison to other species from the same geographical area, show higher resistance to several infectious diseases (2,18,(39)(40)(41)(42). This suggests the existence of specific adaptation mechanisms of the camel immune system that allow their survival and higher resistance to diseases.…”

“…Recent studies in camel immunology have enabled the characterization of several subpopulations of camel leukocytes, including camel monocyte subsets, some subsets of camel lymphocytes, and camel neutrophilic granulocytes (12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18). Neutrophils and monocytes are circulating myeloid immune cells with key roles in innate immunity to bacterial infections.…”

“…Lymphocytes are the most abundant leukocyte subpopulation in camel blood, followed by neutrophils [17]. T and B lymphocytes, together with the antigen processing cells (APC), are critical for the regulation of the adaptive immune response [92].…”

“…Vaccine development to combat camel diseases to enhance camel welfare depends greatly on detailed insights into the mechanisms of camel adaptive immune responses. Unfortunately, the available body of literature about the camel immune system and mechanisms of recognition and immunogenetic diversity suffers from wide gaps [17].…”
