Recent Advances in Ammonia Combustion Technology in Thermal Power Generation System for Carbon Emission Reduction

Abstract: With the formation of an international carbon-neutral framework, interest in reducing greenhouse gas emissions is increasing. Ammonia is a carbon-free fuel that can be directly combusted with the role of an effective hydrogen energy carrier, and its application range is expanding. In particular, as research results applied to power generation systems such as gas turbines and coal-fired power plants have been reported, the technology to use them is gradually being advanced. In the present study, starting with a… Show more

“…After calculation, the LHV of the coal molecule is 50,454.8 kJ/mol. The LHV of NH 3 is 316.2 kJ/mol . The combustion reaction of coal is C 102 H 78 O 10 N 2 + 117.5 O 2 (g) → 102 CO 2 (g) + 2 NO (g) + 39 H 2 O (g) and the combustion reaction of NH 3 is NH 3 (g) + 0.75 O 2 (g) → 0.5 N 2 (g) + 1.5 H 2 O (g).…”

“…One more promising field of industrial use of ammonia and “ammonia” fuel cells is accumulation, storage, and subsequent reverse conversion of excess electric power produced by renewable power sources. The hydrogen required for ammonia synthesis is obtained from electrolysis, and nitrogen is recovered from air [ 44 ]. According to forecasts, the use of ammonia as a hydrogen-containing carbon-free fuel will start after 2030.…”

“…Studies performed in various countries since the 1960s demonstrated in principle the possibility of using ammonia as a motor fuel without essential upgrade of internal combustion engines both when ammonia is added to standard motor fuel and when it is used as a mixture with methane, hydrogen, and organic solvents [36,[39][40][41]. In addition, ammonia, both in the pure form and in a mixture with methane and hydrogen, is considered as a fuel for gas turbines [42][43][44][45]. Recently there has been active progress in studies concerning the possibility of using the existing and developing new fuel cells allowing conversion of ammonia to electric power [42].…”
