Recent advances and progresses in photonic devices for passive radiative cooling application: a review

Abstract: This review covers the recent progress made in the nanophotonic devices-based daytime passive radiative coolers. The radiative cooling capabilities along with the structural description of various natural species are discussed. The design principle along with key characteristics of the omnidirectional solar reflectors as well as thermal adiators is discussed in detail. Several analogues planner one-dimensional and two-dimensional photonic nanostructures and their current state-of-the-art techniques have been d… Show more

“…Therefore, the proposed structure shows its capability as an angular wavelength filter having its potential applications in dynamic displays, colour tunable smart windows, tunable switches and imaging devices. Moreover, the structure can be fabricated by a simple spin/dip coating or deposition method, thus eliminating the need of complex fabrication techniques [46][47][48]. The novel 1D-PhC and EO material integration further strengthens its competency and inspires for the future scope.…”

“…These structures reflect sub-bandgap solar radiation (i.e., in the MIR range) to reduce parasitic heat generation and also have high emissivity in the IR range. 144 Li et al devised a multilayer dielectric cooler on top of a crystalline silicon solar panel (Fig. 7b).…”

“…In practical applications, there is a need to enhance the flexibility and maneuverability of protective equipment to accommodate the requirements for the protection of movable joints and mobile optical components [13] . Optical metamaterials based on one-dimensional photonic crystals show promise in optical field regulation with scalability [14][15][16] . The photonic bandgap structure in thin sheet (thickness: several tens to hundreds of micrometers) [17] can achieve high reflectivity at a specific wavelength (R ∼ 99%).…”
