Recapitulation of acquired immuno deficiency syndrome associated Kaposi's sarcoma

Abstract: Acquired immuno deficiency syndrome (AIDS) associated Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is one of the clinical forms of KS. KS is caused by human herpes viruses 8 or KS associated herpes virus (KSHV). In India, till now, only 16 cases of AIDS associated KS was reported. Of all the clinical forms of KS, AIDS associated KS is distinct in many ways viz.; cutaneous manifestations commonly affects face and trunk rather than lower limbs, more mucosal lesions, rapidly progressive, and early systemic involvement. When human immun… Show more

“…Although they are the minority among human viruses, retroviruses were central to the emergence of mammals, thus also to humans, being pivotal components in placenta development ( Chuong, 2013 ). In addition, the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the main representative of the group, is one the main life-threatening pathogens, being responsible for immunosuppressive conditions, paving the way to numerous severe secondary infections such as tuberculosis, systemic mycosis, Kaposi sarcoma, among others ( Miceli et al, 2011 ; Godfrey-Faussett and Ayles, 2016 ; Govindan, 2016 ).…”

“…Indeed, the Tat protein -with the help of its sequences of arginine and lysin -has properties which support not only the angiogenesis (by β-fibroblast growth factor and vascular endothelial growth factor A) but also the migration, proliferation, and expression of affected cells [7,8]. The elementary dermatological lesion in KS is an erythematous, angiomatous, and purplish macule which infiltrates gradually to become a papule, then a nodule, finally leading to the formation of broad plates resulting from the junction of budding cutaneous lesions; in addition, lymphedemas are seen more often [6,9]. Epidemic KS differs from other forms by its extensive distribution on the torso and the craniofacial area, frequent invasion into mucosal membranes (nasal, oral, and genital), and a very fast evolution leading to organ dysfunction and death [7,10].…”
