Automatic Classification of Construction Work Codes in Bill of Quantities of National Roadway Based on Text Analysis

The construction work classification code is a crucial index for consistently collecting unit cost data from the bill of quantities (BOQ). Appropriate classification codes assigned to detailed construction work item descriptions are required to verify project cost and for quality control. However, the codification system is complicated and time consuming for estimators to follow. This study proposes a framework to recognize the text of detailed construction work item descriptions in the BOQ and automatically assign the most similar work classification code. The automatic assignment algorithm was designed to score the similarity of the tokenized words in the work item description based on whether they contain the same word. The framework was experimented with using the national roadway BOQ; this BOQ is used for the procurement process in South Korea. It transformed work item descriptions from unstandardized BOQs into standardized data with more than 91.12% accuracy. The results of this study can be used as a prerequisite step for standardizing construction life cycle cost data and the automatic generation of BOQs.

Crucial conditions of domestic subcontract in Malaysian construction industry

In construction industry, almost every construction project has to deal with construction contract, due to the project complexity and high financial risk. The contracts are developed and published by various associations and professional bodies and are widely used in the construction industry. Contract conditions are intended to specify the duties and rights of the contractual parties and must be properly drafted. Contractual parties under a particular contract must be aware of the details of the contract conditions. In Malaysian construction industry, there are several standard forms of main contracts and nominated subcontracts. However, for domestic subcontract, main contractors prefer to use bespoke contract, which the parties modify the standard contracts by omitting several clauses or adding new clauses; thus, potentially compromise the completeness and accuracy of the contract. Hence, the aim of this study is to examine the crucial conditions in the domestic subcontract commonly approached by main contractor in construction projects. A quantitative research method is adopted and the data have been collected by survey questionnaires. There are a total of 100 valid responses received from the construction industry practitioners in Malaysia. The survey objective is to rank the conditions in domestic subcontract from the most to the less important. As the result, the top 5 of relatively important domestic subcontract conditions, out of 27 conditions, are the terms of payment and final account, extension of time, variation, contractor’s and subcontractor’s obligations, and performance bond. The results of these surveys will enhance the contractual knowledge of main contractor and domestic subcontractor and improve awareness of crucial conditions that are prerequisite for the development of domestic subcontract.

Integration of VR with BIM to facilitate real-time creation of bill of quantities during the design phase: a proof of concept study

As building practices change, procedures that seemed indispensable at one point can be abandoned for others, one example of which is the bill of quantities (B/Q). Research into the extant literature attributes the declining use of B/Qs to a multitude of reasons, such as its complexity, the potentially long time required to produce it, the growth in popularity of non-traditional procurement systems, and the challenge of using the information within the document in a construction schedule. With these issues in mind, building information modeling (BIM) and virtual reality (VR) are combined and proposed as a potential solution that allows inclusion of the client into the design process. Following a literature review and precedent study, an experiment was carried out using this new process to simulate a client's design decisions on window and interior furnishings. The choices made by the client using VR automatically updated a B/Q schedule built in Revit and allowed them to have a firm understanding of project costs. Besides giving the client more confidence in a pleasing final outcome, the technology also ensured an up-to-date, accurate, and easily understandable B/Q. The proposed method features great potential savings in cost and time and gives the B/Q a newfound importance in future construction processes. The research case presented in this paper is a stepping stone in exploring new opportunities offered by VR and BIM and how they could improve the reliability and accuracy of traditional procurement within construction, specifically within the B/Q document.
