“…Similar absence of vertical soil fertility gradient in homogenised deposits has been reported for various regions in the world (Dregne, 1995;Lal, 2001). Our findings are not necessarily in contradiction with the existence of lateral fertility gradients elsewhere (Turkelboom et al, 1997(Turkelboom et al, , 1999Herweg and Ludi, 1999;Dercon et al, 2003;Dabney et al, 1999), since these involved soil types with clearly differentiated horizons. Furthermore, this result would also indicate that on deep homogenous soils without vertical fertility gradients, soil erosion may lead in some cases to high nutrient losses (Nigussie et al, 2006), but not to decreased soil fertility.…”

“…Since nearly all farmland is terraced in the study area, the plot's centre has been used as a conservative reference for the unterraced situation (Dercon et al, 2003;Turkelboom et al, 1999). The increment in crop yield was then expressed in monetary terms and compared to costs of stone bund building.…”

“…This preparation may have eased effects of cross tillage, which separated larger soil clods below the root zone. Post tillage management could include (i) repeated cross tillage until soil clods were destroyed, (ii) destruction of soil clods by hoeing (e.g., Turkelboom et al 1999;Zhang et al, 2004;Kimaro et al, 2005;Dupin et al, 2009), (iii) ploughing and harrowing (Wildemeersch et al, 2014) to prepare the seedbed for sowing. Complementary, seeding under clods (similar to recent conservation practices) may be preferred.…”

“…Intentionally, however, they will leave a 2 m wide grass strip uncultivated at the parcel's lower side as physical evidence of the parcel's boundary as well as for sake of soil erosion control; within a few years, a lynchet will develop (Nyssen et al, 2010). These structures are not only partial barriers for sediment transport by water, but also a total barrier for downslope soil transport created by tillage erosion (Govers et al, 1999;Turkelboom et al, 1999) …”
