Reassessment of the phylogenetic relationships of Thiomonas cuprina

Abstract: The published sequence of the 16S rRNA gene of Thiomonas cuprina strain Hö 5 (5DSM 5495 T ) (GenBank accession no. U67162) was found to be erroneous. The 16S rRNA genes from the type strain held by the DSMZ since 1990 (DSM 5495 T 5NBRC 102145 T ) and strain Hö 5 maintained frozen in the Universitä t Regensburg for 23 years (5NBRC 102094) were sequenced and found to be identical, but to show no significant similarity to the U67162 sequence. This also casts some doubt on the previously published 5S and 23S rRNA … Show more

“…A number of thermophilic sulfur-oxidizing betaproteobacteria have been described, including members of genera such as Thiomonas (Shooner et al, 1996;Katayama et al 2006;Kelly et al, 2007), Thermothrix (Odintsova et al, 1996), Tepidimonas (Moreira et al, 2000) and Thiobacillus (Wood & Kelly, 1988;. These organisms have been isolated from terrestrial hot-spring environments or wastewater-treatment plants and most of them are facultative autotrophs or strict heterotrophs.…”

“…The optimal temperature for the growth of Thiomonas spp. ranges from 20°C to 53ºC (estimated from six Thiomonas species) but they can adapt to a wide range of temperatures (some strains can slowly grow at less than 4ºC and up to 65ºC) (Kelly et al, 2007). Although the temperature records of Mt.…”
