Reasons for Surgery Cancellation in a General Hospital: A 10-year Study

Abstract: Background: This study researched related causes that make scheduled surgeries canceled not to be conducted and based on the research it is to derive issues in order to reduce surgery cancellation. Methods: We analyzed the association of surgery cancellation with patient characteristics, surgical characteristics and surgery schedule related characteristics, using electronic medical record (EMR) data on surgeries conducted at a university hospital in Korea over 10 years. Additionally, we examined the reasons fo… Show more

“…To sum up, good medical practice in terms of application and knowledge should provide alternative solutions to avoid the cancellation of the surgical process as much as possible (Antaurco & Méndez, 2018;Corona Martínez & Fonseca Hernández, 2010). The cancellation of scheduled surgeries is a negative indicator of the care quality service that affects not only the patient but also his family (Cho, Lee, Lee, Kim, & Kim, 2019;Perroca, Jericó, & Facundin, 2007).…”

“…Numerous studies have shown that the failures associated with surgeries cancellation are mainly due to the lack of knowledge of the patient's clinical conditions, which are caused by an insufficient preoperative evaluation, that is to say, preventable (Cho et al, 2019;Dobarro et al, 2019;Muñoz et al, 2018).…”

“…Among the works focusing on identifying surgeries with high cancellation risk, a retrospective cohort study [ 29 ] examined the association between patient, surgeon, and system factors and proved that several patient and system factors can be used to identify surgeries with a high likelihood of cancellation. The factors associated with surgery cancellation have been evaluated using chi-squared tests and multivariate logistic regression analyses [ 21 ]. Using multilevel logistic regression, an observational cohort study [ 30 ] identified patient- and hospital-level factors associated with cancellation owing to inadequate bed capacity.…”

“…Many studies reported that the incidence of USC was higher than 10%, even more than 40% in Low- and middle-income countries. 21 Literature revealed many reasons for USC, 22 - 24 such as insufficient operating room capacity, lack of hospital beds, failure of equipment, insufficient planning of surgery, absence of staff, patient no-show, and patient’s medical condition. It is essential to analyze the reasons for USC at one’s individual hospital to reduce the cancellation rate.…”
