Reasons for Pack Size Purchase among US Adults Who Purchase Cigars

Abstract: With municipalities across the US establishing minimum cigar pack size regulations, it is critical to understand what drives pack size preference. The purpose of this exploratory study was to identify reasons for cigar pack size purchase. We used Amazon’s Mechanical Turk to survey adults who had purchased cigars and reported past 30 day use. Participants responded to an open-ended item asking their reasons for purchasing their usual pack size. Responses were double-coded and categorized. Of 152 respondents, 61… Show more

“…This suggests that state, local and impending federal policies in the USA prohibiting flavours will reduce the appeal of cigarillos in this population 41. In addition to flavours, smaller pack size, less expensive cigarillos may be especially appealing to younger and/or less frequent cigarillo smokers because of their affordability, social use and/or for use as blunts to smoke marijuana 22 40 42. This preference was reflected in our results, where under actual price conditions intentions to buy and smoke cigarillos were strongest for smaller packs, while under standardised price conditions preference was greater for larger packs.…”

“…The majority of our study participants smoked cigarillos infrequently (monthly or less) and 75% reported using cigarillos for tobacco or for tobacco and marijuana in the past 12 months. These factors likely contributed to the preference for smaller, lower priced cigarillos 22 40 42. Two-pack cigarillos are typically packaged in foil pouches, which research indicates are perceived to contribute to product freshness, and as useful to store marijuana 22…”

“…Adjusted models account for age (continuous), sex (male or female), race (White, Black, other), ethnicity (not Hispanic, Hispanic), income, and residing in a state with a local cigar pack policy as these factors have been associated with pack quantity purchase and use [ 16 , 22 ].…”

“…Some US municipalities have similarly enacted minimum pack quantity policies to reduce the availability of inexpensive cigars [ 14 ]. However, cigarette pack quantity is positively associated with consumption, with some consumers preferring to pay a premium for smaller packs to self-regulate their use [ 15 , 16 ]. Recognizing this relationship, some countries have enacted maximum pack quantity regulations to reduce consumption and limit the affordability of each individual stick [ 17 ].…”

“…( Brock et al, 2016 , Sbarra et al, 2016 ) Larger pack sizes often cost more per pack than smaller packs, ( King et al, 2020 , Persoskie et al, 2019 ) which is a common reason consumers purchase smaller packs. ( King et al, 2021 , Giovenco et al, 2018 ) There is strong evidence from the cigarette literature that increasing price is an effective way to reduce use, and vulnerable populations like youth and adults with low socioeconomic status are particularly price sensitive. ( Chaloupka et al, 2019 ) In the absence of federal or state restrictions on cigar packaging, municipalities across the US have adopted minimum cigar pack size and price policies in an effort to increase cigar pack price, reduce access to inexpensive cigars, and reduce youth access.…”
