Reasons for death in patients with sepsis and septic shock

Abstract: Purpose sepsis has broad implications for both clinical care and interventional trial design. However, reasons for death in sepsis remain poorly understood. We sought to characterize reasons for in-hospital mortality in a population of patients with sepsis or septic shock. Materials and methods We performed a retrospective review of patients admitted to the intensive care unit with sepsis or septic shock who died during their index admission. Reasons for death were classified into 6 categories determined a p… Show more

“…of patients presenting with a GCS < 9 was significantly higher among patients dying from CNS complications than among patients dying from systemic complications (p = 0.011) that these patients were wrongly labelled due to the retrospective clinical evaluation. Our interrater agreement is comparable to other previous studies and we find the agreement to be acceptable [2,14]. The review of cases with disagreement with a third expert resulted in full agreement.…”

“…The very different courses of disease that lead to death from meningitis emphasize the need for a nuanced view on fatal cases. Categorizing the cause of death as well as characterizing each case has also been suggested in studies of the cause of death from sepsis [12][13][14]. The goal is to be able to prevent complications and to improve the validity of clinical trials by improving study homogeneity.…”

“…Sepsis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, with an estimated worldwide population incidence rate of 437 cases per 100,000 person years . Despite the availability of antibiotics, sepsis remains a major health concern and currently is the most common reason for death in intensive care units . The majority of sepsis cases are preceded by pneumonia .…”
