Rearing of dairy cattle. 4. Effect of concentrate supplementation on the live-weight gain and feed intake of calves offered roughages ad libitum

Abstract: Link to this article: http://journals.cambridge.org/ abstract_S0003356100030269How to cite this article: J. D. Leaver (1973). Rearing of dairy cattle. 4. Effect of concentrate supplementation on the live-weight gain and feed intake of calves offered roughages ad libitum. SUMMARYThe effects of three levels of concentrate supplementation on the liveweight gain and intake of roughages of 12-week-old British Friesian female calves were examined. Each supplement was offered for 12 weeks to two replicates of five ca… Show more

“…At this source there was also a significant and negative interaction between FQ and C (FQ x C), indicating that the supplementary effect of concentrates was dependent on FQ. Similar results have been reported with calves (Leaver, 1973) and beef cattle (Vadiveloo & Holmes, 1979). Milk composition was not significant and it was not possible to calculate fat-corrected milk for the prediction of intake.…”

“…Diet supplementation with concentrate for dairy cows is a function of the nutrient concentration in the forage, which in turn is a function of the stage of maturity of the forage (Crampton and Forshaw 1939;Crampton and Jackson 1944 Harvey (1960) and differences between means were tested by linear comparison (Harvey 1960) and multiple range test (Duncan 1955) (1968). Nelson's (1968) Leaver (1973) obtained similar results with hays of different qualities.…”

“…Although forage intake and animal performance both increase with increasing digestibility of dry forage, and the magnitude of these increases is usually considerably reduced by supplementation with concentrates (Leaver, 1973;Vadiveloo and Holmes, 1979), there is little information available on the effect of concentrate supplementation on the response in performance fAlso a member of staff of the Department of Agriculture for Northern Ireland and the Queen's University, Belfast.…”
