Reanalysis of the Preoptic Afferents and Efferents Involved in the Surge of LH, FSH and Prolactin Release in the Proestrous Rat

Abstract: In order to elucidate neural pathways concerned with the proestrous surge of LH, FSH and prolactin (Prl) release, brain transection or lesion was made acutely under ether anesthesia between 12.00 and 14.00 h of proestrus, and electrochemical stimulation was done under anesthesia with pentobarbital sodium (31.5 mg/kg b.w.) injected at 13.45 h. Transection which interrupted the connection of septum (SEPT), diagonal band of Broca (DBB) and bed nucleus of stria terminalis (BST) with the preoptic-suprachiasmatic ar… Show more

“…Nonetheless, the existence of cell bodies in the dorsal anterior hypothalamic area which selectively effect FSH release upon electrochemical stim ulation has been described [7], Furthermore, separate path ways for the control of gonadotropin release a compact fiber system subserving LH secretion and a more diffuse bundle effecting FSH secretion -has recently been post ulated [14]. Our finding that EV-induced hypothalamic pathology selectively impairs MPOA-induced LH release while leaving FSH releasing mechanisms apparently intact ( …”

“…The likelihood of differential control for the two Received: April 4,1984 Accepted after revision: July 5,1984 surges by the MPOA has received further support in studies involving MPOA stimulation. Both increases and decreases in prolactin secretion have been noted during stimulation of the MPOA [4,6,15]. In conscious, cervically stimulated (CS) females MPOA stimulation can inhibit the nocturnal and diurnal surges of prolactin [12], Appropriately timed stimulation of the MPOA in pentobarbital (PB)-anesthetized females can, however, induce a diurnal surge of pro lactin [12], The MPOA therefore has the capacity to inhibit the nocturnal and diurnal surges.…”

“…Stimulation or lesion of this area has been report ed to increase [3,5,12] and decrease [1,9] prolactin release. In female rats destruction of the MPOA initiates pseudo pregnancy as does coital stimulation but.…”
