Realizing the transformative potential of conservation through the social sciences, arts and humanities

Abstract: Conservation actions most often occur in peopled seascapes and landscapes. As a result, conservation decisions cannot rely solely on evidence from the natural sciences, but must also be guided by the social sciences, the arts and the humanities. However, we are concerned that too much of the current attention is on research that serves an instrumental purpose, by which we mean that the social sciences are used to justify and promote status quo conservation practices. The reasons for engaging the social science… Show more

“…Early-career researchers are increasingly educated and encouraged to conduct more applied research, to collaborate across disciplines and to engage with local communities. Certainly, the global conservation community is adopting more collaborative and integrated approaches for conservation (Bennett and Roth, 2018) and there are increasing opportunities for researchers to collaborate across disciplines and with society, including workshops, summer schools and conferences, such as International Marine Conservation Congress.…”

“…However, the level of contribution depends a great deal on how accepting conservationists are of the lessons of social science. Despite apparent philosophical shifts, much of the 'old school' focus on instrumental research still remain, and there is a danger that social science may be used superficially to support status quo conservation practices (Bennett and Roth, 2019). 'Mainstreaming' of the social sciences within conservation may be necessary to overcome barriers to its full acceptance.…”

“…This means recognition of institutional cultural biases, lack of institutional capacity for social sciences, and biases in funding prioritization; problems which may require fundamental restructuring of educational and research institutions to overcome (Bennett, 2018). However, embracing such an integration could yield vast benefits for conservation projects (Bennett and Roth, 2019). Below, we engage in detail with a few examples of how social science methods like social network analysis, soft system methodologies and conservation marketing can inform conservation methodologies.…”

“…Moreover, localized initiatives may lack the financial, technical and administrative means to support large-scale conservation and management in the absence of larger coordinating bodies (Schwartzman & Zimmerman, 2005). Yet, the thriving literature on conservation social sciences suggests that there are alternatives that are able to reconcile ecological sustainability with social justice (Bennett & Roth, 2019).…”
