A search is presented for new physics in events with two low-momentum, oppositely charged leptons (electrons or muons) and missing transverse momentum in protonproton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data collected using the CMS detector at the LHC correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb −1 . The observed event yields are consistent with the expectations from the standard model. The results are interpreted in terms of pair production of charginos and neutralinos ( χ ± 1 and χ 0 2 ) with nearly degenerate masses, as expected in natural supersymmetry models with light higgsinos, as well as in terms of the pair production of top squarks ( t), when the lightest neutralino and the top squark have similar masses. At 95% confidence level, wino-like χ ± 1 / χ 0 2 masses are excluded up to 230 GeV for a mass difference of 20 GeV relative to the lightest neutralino. In the higgsino-like model, masses are excluded up to 168 GeV for the same mass difference. For t pair production, top squark masses up to 450 GeV are excluded for a mass difference of 40 GeV relative to the lightest neutralino. Data and simulated samplesThe data used in this search correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb −1 of protonproton (pp) collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, recorded in 2016 using the CMS detector. The data are selected using two triggers: an inclusive p miss T trigger, which is used for signal regions (SRs) with an offline p miss T cut > 200 GeV and an additional trigger which requires two muons to lower the offline p miss T cut to 125 GeV. Both the muon p T and the muon pair p T have a trigger online cut of p T > 3 GeV. The inclusive p miss T triggers correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb −1 , whereas the events recorded with the dimuon+p miss T trigger correspond to 33.2 fb −1 .Simulated signal and major background processes, such as tt, W+jets, and Z+jets are generated with the MADGRAPH5 aMC@NLO 2.2.2 [32, 33] event generator at leading order (LO) precision in perturbative QCD using the MLM merging scheme [34]. Searches for supersymmetric electroweakinos have entered a crucial phase, as the integrated luminosity of the Large Hadron Collider is now high enough to compensate for their weak production cross-sections. Working in a framework where the neutralinos and charginos are the only light sparticles in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, we use GAMBIT to perform a detailed likelihood analysis of the electroweakino sector. We focus on the impacts of recent ATLAS and CMS searches with 36 fb −1 of 13 TeV proton-proton collision data. We also include constraints from LEP and invisible decays of the Z and Higgs bosons. Under the background-only hypothesis, we show that current LHC searches do not robustly exclude any range of neutralino or chargino masses. However, a pattern of excesses in several LHC analyses points towards a possible signal, with neutralino masses of (mχ0 1 , mχ0 2 , mχ0 3 , mχ0 4 ) = (8-155, 103-260, 130-473, 219-502) GeV and chargino masses of (mχ± 1 , mχ± 2 ) = (104-259, 224-507) GeV at the 95% confidence level. The lightest neutralino is mostly bino, with a possible modest Higgsino or wino component. We find that this excess has a combined local significance of 3.3σ, subject to a number of cautions. If one includes LHC searches for charginos and neutralinos conducted with 8 TeV proton-proton collision data, the local significance is lowered to 2.9σ. We briefly consider the implications a anders.kvellestad@fys.uio.no b martin.white@adelaide.edu.au for dark matter, finding that the correct relic density can be obtained through the Higgs-funnel and Z-funnel mechanisms, even assuming that all other sparticles are decoupled. This paper presents results of searches for the electroweak production of supersymmetric particles in models with compressed mass spectra. The searches use 139 fb −1 of ffiffi ffi s p ¼ 13 TeV proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Events with missing transverse momentum and two same-flavor, oppositely charged, low-transverse-momentum leptons are selected, and are further categorized by the presence of hadronic activity from initial-state radiation or a topology compatible with vector-boson fusion processes. The data are found to be consistent with predictions from the Standard Model. The results are interpreted using simplified models of R-parity-conserving supersymmetry in which the lightest supersymmetric partner is a neutralino with a mass similar to the lightest chargino, the second-to-lightest neutralino, or the slepton. Lower limits on the masses of charginos in different simplified models range from 193 to 240 GeV for moderate mass splittings, and extend down to mass splittings of 1.5 to 2.4 GeV at the LEP chargino bounds (92.4 GeV). Similar lower limits on degenerate light-flavor sleptons extend up to masses of 251 GeV and down to mass splittings of 550 MeV. Constraints on vector-boson fusion production of electroweak SUSY states are also presented.
