The roles of emergency responders are challenging and often physically demanding, so it is essential that their duties are performed safely and effectively. In this article, we address real-time bio-signal sensor monitoring for responders in disaster scenarios. In particular, we propose the integration of a set of health monitoring sensors suitable for detecting stress, anxiety and physical fatigue in an Internet of Cooperative Agents architecture for search and rescue (SAR) missions (SAR-IoCA), which allows remote control and communication between human and robotic agents and the mission control center. With this purpose, we performed proof-of-concept experiments with a bio-signal sensor suite worn by firefighters in two high-fidelity SAR exercises. Moreover, we conducted a survey, distributed to end-users through the Fire Brigade consortium of the Provincial Council of Málaga, in order to analyze the firefighters’ opinion about biological signals monitoring while on duty. As a result of this methodology, we propose a wearable sensor suite design with the aim of providing some easy-to-wear integrated-sensor garments, which are suitable for emergency worker activity. The article offers discussion of user acceptance, performance results and learned lessons.

The practice of sports has been steadily evolving, taking advantage of different technological tools to improve different aspects such as individual/collective training, support in match development or enhancement of audience experience. In this work, an in-house implemented monitoring system for golf training and competition is developed, composed of a set of distributed end devices, gateways and routers, connected to a web-based platform for data analysis, extraction and visualization. Extensive wireless channel analysis has been performed, by means of deterministic 3D radio channel estimations and radio frequency measurements, to provide coverage/capacity estimations for the specific use case of golf courses. The monitoring system has been fully designed considering communication as well as energy constraints, including wireless power transfer (WPT) capabilities in order to provide flexible node deployment. System validation has been performed in a real golf course, validating end-to-end connectivity and information handling to improve overall user experience.

In the field of rescue robotics, data collection about the environment and efficient communications are fundamental for the success of search and rescue missions. Digitalization provides new ways of detecting and localizing potential victims via the wireless devices carried by the users. Nowadays, the number of personal Bluetooth low energy wearables in use (smartbands, smartwatches, earbuds...) increases constantly, being a yet-to-be-exploited personal radio frequency beacon in the case of an emergency, where the user may not be localized and unconscious. In this paper, the results of experimental tests of a Bluetooth low energy based detection system ported by terrestrial and aerial robots are provided, in order to test the feasibility of such system for the localization of the victims in unknown complex disaster areas. The results show that the tested devices can be reliably detected up to 15 meters away when using transmission power values typical of a smartphone, while being able to detect even lightly burdened devices. These results support the idea of developing an algorithm for the delimitation of areas of interest for the search and rescue groups, influencing the routes followed by the robot with the objective of exploring the detected devices area in the search of victims.
