Apology Strategies: Appropriateness and Frequency of Use by Saudi EFL Students

The present study aimed at investigating the apology strategies employed by Saudi FEL university students. The researcher examined the appropriateness of participants’ apologies, first through analyzing them in terms of Olshtain and Cohen’s “semantic formulas in the apology speech act set” (Olshtain & Cohen, 1983), then by having native speakers of English to evaluate them for appropriateness on a four-point Likert scale. Results indicated that “illocutionary force indicating device” (e.g., I am sorry) was the most frequently used strategy as it was utilized in 75% of the responses. As for the appropriateness of the apology strategies used by Saudi EFL undergraduate students, 23.4% of the responses to the situations that required apology were inappropriate or strongly inappropriate. Exposure to culturally dense language content was suggested to help EFL learners utilize apologies appropriately.

This research aims to investigate the significant relationship between English learning motivation and pragmatic competence of non-English major postgraduate students and their current pragmatic competence. 350 non-English major postgraduate students from Javanese provinces (West, Central, and East Java) participated in this study. This study was quantitative research in the form of a correlational study by using one adapted questionnaire (Attitude and Motivation Test Battery (AMTB)) for English learning motivation and two kinds of adapted pragmatic competence tests (Multiple-choice Discourse Completion Test (MDCT) and Written Discourse Completion Test (WDCT)). The data were analyzed by using Normality Test, Linearity Test, Bivariate Pearson Product Moment, and Descriptive statistical analysis by IBM SPSS 26. The finding indicated English learning motivation correlated with English pragmatic competence. Although the correlation degree was 0.563 which had a moderate degree of correlation, they have a positive correlation which means the English learning motivation has contributed to the pragmatic competence. The current level of the non-English major postgraduate students’ pragmatic competence in Javanese provinces was categorized as still developing because the students hardly understand responses in the pragmatic competence test, especially in pragmatic awareness.

The speech Acts of Arab students have also been an interesting domain of research due to the translation of phrases by the students to the English language directly from the Arabic language. Currently, various researches have been conducted in this domain. The speech acts of requests are complaint, complement, compliment, greeting, invitation, refusal, request etc. The most commonly used among these requests and apologies which when compared to the rest of them holds a number of repetitions. This study undertakes a meta-analysis to examine the utilization of request and apology speech acts with respect to native Arab-speaking post-graduate students who communicate with their instructors in the English language. Previous studies were selected with respect to the apology and request speech acts. The studies reveal that the structural formation of the EFL Learners of the English language is like those of the native Arab speakers. It is vital for the EFL learners of Arab countries to understand the difference between standard cultural norms and practices that must be used in English-speaking social settings to avoid a pragmatic miscommunication or in other words failure of the same and hence emphasize linguistic pragmatics for the learners to get accustomed to a cultural environment of English-speaking ones which eventually envisions a communication with clarity and unambiguity.
