Real-World Experiences in Autistic Adult Diagnostic Services and Post-diagnostic Support and Alignment with Services Guidelines: Results from the ASDEU Study

Abstract: Research providing an evidence-base for autistic adult services is sparse. The Autism Spectrum Disorders in the European Union (ASDEU) network implemented an on-line survey to determine gaps in autistic adult diagnostic evaluation and post-diagnostic support services. More than 55% in all groups experienced most of the recommended features for diagnostic evaluation for autistic adults. In contrast, < 2% of adults or carers, and < 21% of professionals experienced each of the recommended features for post-… Show more

“…In addition, only 63% of clinicians who assess adolescents, and less than half of those who assess adults, incorporate standardised autism assessments into their diagnostic evaluations. These results are consistent with findings from a recent, large-scale European study, which showed that there are major gaps between diagnostic practice and clinical guidelines for diagnosis and post-diagnostic support for autistic adults (Scattoni et al, 2021). Together, these findings suggest that NZ DHBs may need to increase access to comprehensive, multi-disciplinary autism assessments for adolescents and adults and ensure that robust diagnostic processes are implemented for these two groups.…”

“…Alternatively, these results may reflect discrepancies in the perceptions and experiences on local services' use between adults and professionals. Previous studies have already revealed poor alignment between services recommendations and actual experiences by autistic adults (Crane et al, 2018;Mukaetova-Ladinska, & Stuart-Hamilton, 2016;Scattoni et al, 2021).…”

“…The comparison group wasn't representative of the general population either, especially regarding the sex ratio (77% women). Female preponderance happens to be common in online surveys where participation is based on a voluntary commitment; recent online surveys regarding COVID-19 (Sulistyawati et al, 2021;Zhang et al, 2021) as well as surveys conducted within the ASD population (Scattoni et al, 2021) have reported similar imbalance towards women. Second, due to the time-sensitive aspect of the research and lockdown circumstances, all data were self-reported.…”
