Real-Time Ultrasonographic Evaluation of Canine Gastric Motility in the Postprandial State

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Gastric motility is affected by several pathological conditions which may induce upper gastrointestinal clinical symptoms. The pathogenesis of canine gastric motility disorders is poorly understood because of methodological limitations. This study aimed at establishing a simple method for evaluating postprandial gastric motility in dogs. Gastric motility was ultrasonographically assessed in 7 healthy beagles using a technique previously described in humans. The motility index (MI), an indicator of ga… Show more

“…Gastric antral motility is regarded as one of the major regulator of the gastric transit [4]. The ultrasonographic method we used in the present study had already confirmed the correlation with gastric emptying time determined by 13 C-octanoic acid breath test in advance [11]. Following our studies, further studies may be required to investigate whether mosapride enhance the gastric emptying rate as well.…”

“…The dogs received mosapride at doses of 0.5, 0.75, 1, and 2 mg/ kg (Pronamid; DS Pharma Animal Health Co., Ltd.) followed by 1-week washout period. The gastric antral motility was ultrasonographically assessed after single administration of mosapride according to a previous report in dogs [11]. The tablet drug was ground into powder and dissolved in 15 ml of distilled water.…”

“…Postprandial gastric motility was evaluated as described in earlier reports in dogs using ultrasonography with a 7.5 MHz‐phased array sector transducer. Commercial canned food (10 g/kg) was given 30 minutes before the ultrasound examination.…”

“…Ultrasound is now available in many veterinary practices and may be useful as a noninvasive tool for a qualitative and semiquantitative assessment of delayed gastric emptying and ileus in critically ill small animal patients. Gastric emptying measurements and small intestinal peristalsis using ultrasound have been investigated in dogs and have been validated and applied in human medicine . Ultrasound has notable advantages over other tools: GI motility may be evaluated with limited restraint, and the technology is widely available.…”
