Real-Time Survivor Detection System in SaR Missions Using Robots

Abstract: This paper considers the issue of the search and rescue operation of humans after natural or man-made disasters. This problem arises after several calamities, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and explosions. It usually takes hours to locate the survivors in the debris. In most cases, it is dangerous for the rescue workers to visit and explore the whole area by themselves. Hence, there is a need for speeding up the whole process of locating survivors accurately and with less damage to human life. To tackle this… Show more

“…The availability of environmental, weather, vision, sensor, and location data allows for the development of context-aware applications and services. Such applications often perform data analysis and predictive analytics to provide real-time information and responses/recommendations for effectively managing possible risks and unexpected situations in the field of operations [11][12][13]. Interaction among different IoT devices/systems can further improve the produced results, as in most cases, the sensed data are not exploited to their full extent, while in some cases, interoperability is a mandatory enabler for capturing the maximum potential worth [14].…”

“…A seismic sensor can sense the speed and acceleration signals caused by the ground movement and convert into directly datable electrical signals. The seismic sensors are widely used in in energy exploration, building quality detection and geological detection apart from earthquake [45,51]. The main observation data include temperature, pressure and humidity [52].…”

“…Locating survivors in remote and difficult-to-reach areas presents significant obstacles for search and rescue (SAR) teams. Environments that are difficult to reach include mountain cliffs, radiationcontaminated sites, combat zones [1], and areas impacted by natural disasters like avalanches, earthquakes, and floods [2]. A SAR operation aims to locate a lost or injured person by searching the largest area of the territory in the shortest time possible [3].…”

“…The evolution of technology has brought in a new era of possibilities, offering innovative tools to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of SAR operations [6]. These innovative solutions have played a crucial role in minimizing the risks faced by rescuers while also accelerating the entire operation [2]. Unmanned search and rescue vehicles are essential in locating victims during rescue missions.…”
