Abstract: A key issue in upstream E&P operations is how to manage wells and reservoirs more effectively. Oil and gas production from onshore and offshore wells can be relatively difficult to manage, not only because of multiphase nature of the well production, but also due to lack of a continuous, reliable measurement of well/reservoir performance. On the tenth anniversary of the first Intelligent Energy Conference held in 2006, it is appropriate to look back at some of the technologies introduced at the time, and report out on how these have been progressed. This paper discusses one of the technologies: the use of data driven models for well rate estimation, to support and enable real-time surveillance and optimization. In the early 2000s real-time data from oil and gas fields became available in abundance on engineering central office desktops via process data historians and wide area / global communications networks. A key challenge to production management, then, as now, was: "What are the wells producing?" The April 2006 SPE Paper 99963 introduced data driven modelling for continuous well production surveillance leveraging on the suddenly abundant and often very revealing PI data. Today, ten years later, a stream of success stories on the use real time well rate estimates based on data driven models continue to be reported, and these tools are seen as best practice in many different operational scenarios. This paper reviews the key concepts introduced in 2006, and extensions and applications of the technology to various aspects of production surveillance and optimization. As with all innovations, the most challenging elements in the journey have been related to people and processes. The paper discusses these issues in relation to the important role played by technology integration themes such as Smart Fields.

Operations Excellence Maximizes the Value of the Digital Oilfield Implementations

In a competitive environment and uncertain economic conditions, running flawless operations is becoming an even more acute concern. This is true for any operator and for service companies providing production optimization services. To this end, a digital oilfield program was implemented across several assets as part of an operations excellence program. The operations excellence program was designed as a vehicle to maximize the performance of operations and implement a common culture in the assets. This comprehensive program covers all main operational processes of the asset. Each of the domains is addressed from the point of view of processes, people, and management systems, to implement best practices and achieve a common culture. A well-defined methodology enforces the change. The digital oilfield program was designed from the beginning as an essential element of the operations excellence program, one with impact on the work processes and value generated by the assets. It comprises a standard that defines the minimum requirements, an implementation methodology, a technical guidance, and audits. When combined, these programs provide efficient integrated management of the assets. If the digital oilfield is usually seen as a technical project focusing on infrastructure, its implementation as part of the operations excellence program enables achieving three major objectives: modifying operational practices to take the technology into account, framing the digital oilfield to optimize its value, and feeding operations excellence with reliable data to maximize decision quality.

Driving to Top Quartile Well, Reservoir and Facility Management Through Process Standardization and System Integration

Integrated Production Surveillance Tools are gaining wider recognition and adoption in E&P organizations as an effective technology enabler. Key operational data is now at the finger-tips of end-users, enhancing efficient diagnosis and optimization of production issues. This paper will focus on Shell's ongoing journey from process standardization, toolkit development to early deployments and lessons learnt along the way. Best practices, our value delivery approach and usage metrics collected to date will also be shared. Shell has embarked on a journey to improve the execution of Well, Reservoir and Facility management (WRFM) in its operated assets. This multi-year programme involved standardization of best practice business processes. A comprehensive, integrated surveillance capability was identified as key to this standardization drive. In 2013, Shell started a project to develop and deploy "The WRFM Next Generation Surveillance toolkit". The project applies a broadly consistent, systematic, iterative approach to product development and deployment allowing for continuous input from the business thus helping to build ownership of the surveillance toolkit when in production. The project successfully developed the first suite of tool capabilities to support the following business processes: – Production reports and charts to quickly highlight deviations from plan for daily and monthly reviews. – Non-Compliance summary report for well and surface facilities. – Exception Based Surveillance for well and surface facilities using complex algorithms and multiple real-time data sources. – Live Operating Envelopes and multi-variable real-time trends for well and surface facilities surveillance. – Well comparison charts, Creaming curves and integrated limit diagrams for production system optimisation. Given the geographically diverse user base, high usage frequency and large data volumes, the surveillance toolkit is built using new technology that offers a cost effective solution to meet very high performance standards and visualization capabilities.
