Recently, isolated microgrids have been operated using renewable energy sources (RESs), diesel generators, and battery energy storage systems (BESSs) for an economical and reliable power supply to loads. The concept of the complementary control, in which power imbalances are managed by diesel generators in the long time scale and BESSs in the short time scale, is widely adopted in isolated microgrids for efficient and stable operation. This paper proposes a new complementary control strategy for regulating the frequency and state of charge (SOC) when the system has multiple diesel generators and BESSs. In contrast to conventional complementary control, the proposed control strategy enables the parallel operation of diesel generators and BESSs, as well as SOC management. Furthermore, diesel generators regulate the equivalent SOC of BESSs with hierarchical control. Additionally, BESSs regulate the frequency of the system with hierarchical control and manage their individual SOCs. We conducted a case study by using Simulink/MATLAB to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy in comparison with conventional complementary control.

This thesis directed by Professor Dragan MaksimovicA methodology is proposed and executed to characterize and model inverters for grid integration studies using Power Hardware-in-the-Loop. A Hardware-in-the-Loop system is configured using a Real-Time Data System (RTDS), grid simulator, load bank, photovoltaic inverter and bus system. A characterization scheme is developed on the RTDS that is based on the abnormal grid conditions and tests outlined in IEEE 1547 Standard for Interconnecting Distributed Resources with Electric Power Systems. The RTDS is then used to control both the grid simulator and load bank. It was found that it is possible to characterize the inverter's grid protection controller's response to abnormal voltage, abnormal frequency and islanding conditions without prior knowledge of intimate control algorithms or hardware configuration.A model of the system was then created in Matlab Simulink using the data obtained from the characterization process. The inverter is modeled on a high level as a controlled current source and a controller for the inverter model is developed such that the detection and response to the stated abnormal grid conditions of the model directly mimics that of the actual inverter.

This paper aims to evaluate experimentally the capability of variable speed wind turbine to contribute to primary frequency control. Emphasis on isolated power system is performed by considering the French Guadeloupe island as a technical case study. The experimental work is based on the Power Hardware In the Loop (PHIL) method. A wind farm is emulated by equipments with reduced scale and is connected to a real-time simulator simulating the Guadeloupe power system via a reversible power amplifier. Two different scenarios have been tested. Comparison demonstrates that variable speed wind turbine can provide a significant support to primary frequency control.
