Real Time Optimization: Classification and Assessment

Abstract: Summary The Real-Time Optimization (RTO) Technical Interest Group (TIG) has endeavored to clarify the value of real-time optimization projects. RTO projects involve three critical components: People, Process, and Technology. Understanding these components will help establish a framework for determining the value of RTO projects. In this paper, the Technology component is closely examined and categorized. Levels within each Technology category are illustrated by use of spider… Show more

“…For this to occur, a variety of related tasks must be accomplished. These include: (1) injecting as deeply as possible, (2) lifting the well from a single point of injection, (3) injecting under stable, steady-state conditions, (4) injecting the optimal amount of gas for the given production based on individual well performance, (5) minimizing back pressure and (6) allocating injection gas amongst a population of wells in the most resource efficient manner possible.…”

“…In this project, new technology has been developed to assist production engineers in the well-by-well optimization of gas lift systems. Well-by-well optimization has long been recognized as having value 3 , but has often proven impractical to carry out on a routine basis due to the labor-intensive nature of the work and the limited number of individuals with the required level of expertise to perform it. This project sought to solve this problem by developing a system of intelligent agents which leverage both real time data and gas lift domain knowledge to assist engineers in these well-by-well optimization tasks.…”

“…It has become increasingly apparent that operators who implement a comprehensive integrated production-optimization strategy (Cramer 2008;Ella et al 2006;Nikolaou et al 2006;Sankaran et al 2009;Lumley 2001;Mochizuki et al 2006) stand to maximize their reservoir recovery and ultimately increase their return on investment. A successful solution must take into consideration the soloed optimization objectives at the various levels and the managementsystem issues related to ownership of work processes involved in an integrated strategy (Awasthi et al 2007(Awasthi et al , 2008a(Awasthi et al , 2008b.…”
