“…The basic principles of PTR-ToF-MS have been described elsewhere in detail (Jordan et al, 2009;Huang et al, 2016). Briefly, the instrument consists of a hollow cathode ion source that generates a pure H3O + reagent ion stream, a drift tube is used to ionize VOCs, and a high resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometer separates the ions according to their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z).…”

“…In their study, biomass burning took place in a 3000 m 3 combustion chamber, and the smokes were then injected into another chamber for aging experiments with a dilution ratio of ∼ 25. Previous studies have demonstrated that levoglucosan is a semi-volatile compound with a saturation concentration of ∼ 8 µg m −3 at 293 K (Grieshop et al, 2009b;Huffman et al, 2009;Hennigan et al, 2011). As a result, the high dilution conditions used in our study would cause levoglucosan to evaporate, and this may at least partly explain the low f 60 observed in the POA from straw burning.…”
