Real-Time Monitoring and Analysis of Zebrafish Electrocardiogram with Anomaly Detection

Abstract: Heart disease is the leading cause of mortality in the U.S. with approximately 610,000 people dying every year. Effective therapies for many cardiac diseases are lacking, largely due to an incomplete understanding of their genetic basis and underlying molecular mechanisms. Zebrafish (Danio rerio) are an excellent model system for studying heart disease as they enable a forward genetic approach to tackle this unmet medical need. In recent years, our team has been employing electrocardiogram (ECG) as an efficien… Show more

“…Specifically, a finite impulse response (FIR) band-pass filter, cut off frequency set between 3 and 45 Hz, was used to filter raw ECG signals. The filtered signals were then passed through additional low-pass filter and high-pass filter to remove low and high frequency noise, and then we calculated its first derivatives 32 . We used window of moving average for smoothing and removing 50 Hz power and muscle activity noise (Supplemental Fig.…”

“…A series of ECG variables, including HR, P-wave amplitude, R-wave amplitude, and PP and RR intervals were calculated with an in-house Matlab code [28]. The root mean square of the successive differences (RMSSD) [29] was used to evaluate the short-period (60 seconds) beat-…”

“…It can reveal a decreased in heart rate concerning the human ether-a-go-go gene (hERG) channel blockade, allowing for drug testing. Moreover, zebrafish also provide an efficient genetic approach to reveal the genetic basis underlying molecular mechanisms of numerous heart diseases [51]. It could be a robust human cardiac electrophysiology model since its heart rate, and action potential morphology are similar, although some differences are apparent [52].…”
