Real-Time Intravascular Shear Stress in the Rabbit Abdominal Aorta

Abstract: Fluid shear stress is intimately linked with the biological activities of vascular cells. A flexible microelectromechanical system (MEMS) sensor was developed to assess spatial- and temporal-varying components of intravascular shear stress (ISS) in the abdominal aorta of adult New Zealand white (NZW) rabbits. Real-time ISS (ISSreal-time) was analyzed in comparison with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations for wall shear stress (WSS). Three-dimensional abdominal arterial geometry and mesh were created… Show more

“…Over the last decade, the advent of flexible microelectronic membranes is evidenced by the biomedical applications to interrogate electrical depolarization in the small vertebrate hearts[3, 4], and the deployment of intravascular flexible shear stress sensors to assess atherosclerotic plaque[4]. These parylene-based high-density electrode arrays have further enabled electrical stimulation in the retina to restore vision and spinal cord to restore locomotion[5].…”

“…24 In fact, EIS measurement can be performed at multiple sites for a single lesion to generate a contour map containing both topographical and electrochemical information. In addition, EIS measurements can be potentially incorporated with intracardiac echocardiogram, 22 optical coherence tomography (OCT), 17,40 and/or micro-thermal sensors 1 to further enhance the sensitivity and specificity for the assessment of pro-inflammatory states or unstable plaque.…”

“…Tracker-10, 80/15 guide catheter (Target Therapeutic) were inserted under binocular magnification and heparin administered (150 units/kg). The catheter and a Dasher-14 Steerable Guide wire (Target Therapeutic) were then advanced under fluoroscopic guidance (Phillips BV-22HQ C-arm) into the aortic arch (Ai et al, 2009). The catheter and guide wire were withdrawn to the thoracic aorta, and lastly, abdominal aorta for similar interrogations.…”
