Real-Time Implementation of MAD-Based RFI Excision on FPGA

Abstract: Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) excision in wideband radio telescope receivers is gaining significance due to increasing levels of manmade RFI and operation outside the protected radio astronomy bands. The effect of RFI on astronomical data can be significantly reduced through real-time excision. In this paper, Median Absolute Deviation (MAD) is used for excising signals corrupted by strong impulsive interference. MAD estimation requires recursive median calculation which is a computationally challenging pr… Show more

“…Coherent beam filterbank data at the best achievable time-frequency resolution were recorded (listed in Table 1). In some of the uGMRT observing epochs (2019 December 2, 2020 January 10, and 2020 February 15), we used a real real-time broadband radio frequency interference (RFI) removal system (Buch et al 2016(Buch et al , 2019a(Buch et al , 2019b during our observations. Our observations spanned a period of 10 yr, covering a total of 39 eclipses.…”

“…The observations in each band were taken in two sessions, placed on consecutive days. We used real-time Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) filtering (e.g., Buch et al 2019Buch et al , 2022Buch et al , 2023 in GWB, targeted for mitigating broadband (BB) RFI. We used it in the mode where the RFI samples (those that exceeded the 3σ threshold in voltages) were replaced with digital noise.…”

“…3C 48 was used as the flux and phase calibrator. The real-time radio frequency interference (RFI) filter system for the uGMRT (Buch et al 2019) was used to mitigate any broadband RFI that might be present during the observation.…”
