The paper proposes the design of velocity based on road inclinations, speed limits, a preceding vehicle on the lane and traveling time. A new control method in which the longitudinal control incorporates the brake and traction forces is also proposed to achieve the required velocity. By choosing the velocity which is appropriate according to the road and traffic information, the number of unnecessary accelerations and brakings and their durations can be significantly reduced. In the design method the modeling and robust control of the LPV theory are exploited. The operation of the longitudinal controlled system and the influences of different designed parameters are analyzed through vehicle simulations. Finally, the efficiency of the controlled system is demonstrated on a real transportation route.

Abstract: A nonlinear integral-uncertainty observer is presented, which can estimate the integral of measurement output signal and the uncertainty in system, synchronously. In order to be satisfied with the existing hardware computational environments and to select the parameters more easily, a simplified linear version of the nonlinear integral-uncertainty observer is also developed. The effectiveness of the proposed observers are verified through the numerical simulations and experiments: i) through the integral-uncertainty observers, the attitude angle and the uncertainties in attitude dynamics are estimated synchronously from the measurements of angular velocity, and the estimate results by the two observers are compared; ii) a control law is designed based on the observers to drive the jet aircraft to track a reference trajectory.

The paper focuses on the design of a platoon control system which takes into consideration safe travel by using the string stability theorem and the knowledge of the inclinations of the road along the route of the platoon. By choosing the speed of the platoon fitting in with the inclinations of the road the number of unnecessary accelerations and brakings can be reduced, thus so can the operations of the actuators of the vehicles, i.e. the driveline and the brake system. Although the longitudinal dynamics of the vehicles is formulated in a linear control-oriented model, the non-linear performance of the road inclinations and safety requirements based on the string stability are taken into consideration. The design of the platoon control is based on the robust H ∞ control theory.
