The system composition, function, and run mode of a new intelligent drilling technology in future are prospected in this paper. The technologies, including drilling, new materials, detection controls, microelectronics, telecommunications, computers, robots and ultramicrotechnique, etc., are integrated into the new intelligent drilling technology in future. The portable, truck-mounted, flexible and full automatic drilling rig with coiled tubing will be employed in this system. In future drilling process, intelligent mini-robots mounted on the drill bit will be used to observe and detect all the downhole parameters and send them back to ground so as to simultaneously finish the logging operation in drilling process; intelligent drilling under remote control will be realized by means of controlling the drilling speed and trajectory of bit; all the drilling operations, such as tripping operation, will be completed automatically by the ground robots according to instructions; the cooperation among global drilling operations will be organized through communication network technology. Therefore, it is anticipated to significantly increase the drilling speed with greatly reduced drilling accidents and cost. Owing to the realization of precise control over well trajectory, the intelligent drilling technology will improve the exploration and development of petroleum and natural gas.
Introduction
The new technical revolution has advanced the development of petroleum science and technology. Even though the rapid progress of drilling technologies have reduce drilling cost1–2 significantly in the past ten years, the cost of drilling is still more than that of the other operations in exploration and development of oil and gas. With the application of high-techs in exploration and development, petroleum science and technology will have the informative, intelligent and visual tendencies with the coming of the 21st century. The future drilling technology will be more precise, efficient, intelligent, less costly, and more environmentally friendly3. With the further development of new materials, detection controls, microelectronics, telecommunications, computers, robots and ultramicrotechnique, the new intelligent drilling technology will emerge and become the main development direction of drilling technologies in the 21st century.
Intelligent Drilling System
The new intelligent drilling technology in future will be the integration of drilling and many other technologies, such as information, microelectronics, robots, communication network and so on.
The system of future intelligent drilling is shown in Fig.1. The downhole tools will be very simple and be mainly composed of long-life intelligent bits, highly intelligent mini-robots, bearing groups, mechanical seals, gearboxes, electric motors, the supplementary system of lubricating oil, breakaway joints, coiled tubing (CT) joints and composite coiled tubing (CCT). All ground equipments will be concentratively installed in the carriage of an automobile carrier and be composed of a fully automatic CT drilling rig, the system of collecting and showing data, process-control system, well-control system, the drilling liquid cycle, solid control system, and so on. In every drilling site, intelligent drilling under remote control will be realized due to the realization of the closed information flow between ground and downhole through nanometer cable planted in the CCT; the global drilling cooperation will be organized over the world because the globally centralized control center can control the drilling operations in every drilling site through communication network technology.
