Real time evaluation of tissue optical properties during thermal ablation of ex vivo liver tissues

Abstract: Complete ablation of liver tumors is vital for minimizing the risk of local tumor recurrence. Accurately identifying the hallmarks of tissue necrosis during thermal ablative therapies may significantly increase the efficacy of ablation, while minimizing unnecessary damage to the surrounding normal tissues or critical structures. Light propagation in biological tissues is sensitive to the tissue microstructure and chromophore concentrations. In our previous studies, we found that the wavelength (k) averaged liv… Show more

“…In our previous studies , we showed that the relative changes in µ a and μs of ex vivo porcine liver tissues follow a sigmoidal curve, which correlates well with the thermal damage calculated using the Arrhenius damage model. In this paper, relative changes in µ a and μs of porcine liver tissues are associated with histopathologically assessed thermal damage.…”

“…Future studies may be performed in a water heating bath. In our previous papers , we have shown that the relative changes in µ a and μs have a better contrast than the absolute µ a and μs values. The relative changes in µ a for Groups 3 and 4 were significantly different from each other ( P = 0.003) (Fig.…”

“…Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the sixth most common malignancy globally and the third most common cause of cancer-related death [1][2][3]. Radiofrequency ablation (RFA), a type of hyperthermia treatment, has been accepted as a curative therapy alternative to surgical resection and liver transplantation for small HCC due to such advantages as minimal invasiveness, safety, repeatability and shorter hospitalization time [4].…”
