The endodontic literature contains a plethora of studies on static and dynamic cyclic fatigue resistance tests performed on a large array of rotary or reciprocating nickel–titanium endodontic instruments. It was the aim of this review to summarize the currently available evidence to point out the different outcomes from static versus dynamic tests and to assess whether cyclic fatigue tests provide useful data and information for clinical practice. An electronic literature research in the database PubMed was performed using appropriate search terms, and the titles and abstract were screened for relevance. Language was restricted to English. The review reveals marked differences between the results obtained in static and dynamic tests, and also, the results for the same instruments assessed either under static or dynamic experimental conditions are widely inconsistent. Between the lowest and the highest value for one and the same pathfinding instrument was a factor of about 123 when cyclic fatigue was assessed either under static or dynamic experimental conditions. Moreover, standard deviations of up to 30% have been reported. Environmental temperature has a 500% impact on the lifetime of instruments. In conclusion, fatigue resistance tests conducted under room temperature should be regarded as having little meaning and the scientific and clinical benefits of fatigue resistance tests are very limited. These data should be provided by the manufacturer of the instruments.

Analysis of Force and Torque with XP Shaper and OneCurve Systems during Shaping of Narrow Canals

Objective: The purpose of this laboratory-based study was to compare the shaping forces and torques developed by the XP Shaper (FKG Dentaire SA, La Chaux-de-fonds, Switzerland) and OneCurve (Micro-Mega, Besancon, France) systems during shaping of narrow canals. Methods: Mandibular premolars with a single canal were divided equally into two groups; XP Shaper and OneCurve (n=16 each). In both groups, the canals were shaped with XP Shaper file (30/01) or OneCurve file (25/O6) that was inserted three times until it reached the canal length. The tooth was surrounded by water under controlled simulated intracanal temperature throughout the experiment. The inward and outward peak forces and the peak torques were recorded and analyzed statistically using the Mann-Whitney test. The shaping times were analyzed using Student’s t-test. The significance level was set at 5%. Results: In both groups, the developed forces in both directions and the torques increased with the successive insertions of the file. In the two groups, the inward peak forces ranged from 0.33 to 3.12 N, while the outward peak forces ranged from 0.09 to 1.96 N. In the three insertions, the XP Shaper showed significantly lower peak forces in both directions. The peak torque developed in both groups ranged from 0.12 to 1.52 N.cm. XP Shaper had significantly lower torque values in all the insertions than OneCurve. The XP Shaper system was able to completely shape the canals in 33.4 seconds while the OneCurve system was able to completely shape the canals in 32.8 seconds. Conclusion: The XP Shaper system showed favorably lower force and torque values during canal shaping compared with the OneCurve system.

The shaping and cleaning of the root canal are very important in root canal treatment. The excessive force and vibration during biomechanical preparation of the root canal may result in failure of the endodontic file. In this study, force and vibration analysis was carried out during root canal preparation. The samples of human extracted (premolar) teeth were provided by the College of Dental Science and Hospital. Endodontic instruments for reciprocating motion, such as the WaveOne Gold file system, had been used for root canal preparation. Force and vibration signals were recorded by dynamometer and accelerometer, respectively. The acquired signals were denoised using the db4 (SWT denoising 1-D) wavelet. Four levels of decomposition were carried out for each signal. The signal denoising technique was used to remove unwanted noise from the acquired signal. FESEM analysis was used to visualize the levels of severity of endodontic files during the cleaning and shaping of the root canal. In most of the cases, the failure occurred due to the improper use of the root canal instrumentation. The optimum amount of force was used to avoid the file failure and provided the proper instrumentation. The curve fitting regression model was used to find the interdependency between force and vibration.
