Real-Time Dual-Wavelength Time-Resolved Diffuse Optical Tomography System for Functional Brain Imaging Based on Probe-Hosted Silicon Photomultipliers

Abstract: Near-infrared diffuse optical tomography is a non-invasive photonics-based imaging technology suited to functional brain imaging applications. Recent developments have proved that it is possible to build a compact time-domain diffuse optical tomography system based on silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) detectors. The system presented in this paper was equipped with the same eight SiPM probe-hosted detectors, but was upgraded with six injection fibers to shine the sample at several points. Moreover, an automatic s… Show more

“…The miniaturization of a PET system is seriously limited as a result of the large volume and high working voltage of PSPMT. A silicon photomultiplier (SiPM), also referred to as a multi pixel photon counter (MPPC), according to the operation principle, as a new type of semiconductor device, is gradually replacing the PSPMT in a new generation of photodetectors in PET systems [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ] based on the advantages of high quantum efficiency, high gain, fast time response, low operating voltage, compact structure, and immunity to magnetic fields [ 18 , 19 , 20 ].…”

“…The customizable, low-light, fiber photometry system was applied in awake, freely moving mice to interrogate the behavioral correlates of the stress response. Another photonic-based imaging method -optical tomography -is also purposed using injectable fibers (silicon photomultipliers detectors) for dual-wavelength, real-time functional brain imaging (Orive-Miguel et al, 2020). The system allows to follow the brain activation variations over time through analysis of HbO and HbR concentration in the tissues (Figure 5D).…”

“…These developments have resulted in a diverse range of implantable micro-imagers that are specifically designed for functional brain imaging with cell-type specificity, paving the way for enhanced experimental investigations in this area. Examples include the use of optical fiber bundles (Fedotov et al, 2017), light-sheet fluorescence or imaging devices applying photometry (Simone et al, 2018) and tomography (Orive-Miguel et al, 2020) to provide in vivo, highprecision measurements of calcium transients or oxy and deoxyhemoglobin tissue concentrations, respectively.…”

“…4(b) ]. 124 126 At more restricted depths, below 1 cm, spectroscopic optical coherence tomography (OCT) is also applicable, combining broadband illumination with spectrally-resolved interferometric detection. Although these methods have been widely explored in the clinical research setting, they are only just beginning to find routine application in the clinic for patient management.…”
