Real-time detection of transverse stability changes in fishing vessels

Abstract: Fishing is a hazardous activity due to stability related accidents, caused many times by the crew lacking information related to the level of stability of the vessel. A possible solution is offered by stability assessment systems that can help the skipper to identify potential risks and support his decision making process. The metacentric height is a key parameter for vessel stability and its real-time monitoring may be beneficial for alerting the crew about changes in stability. The paper proposes the design o… Show more

“…Five of them focus on the transverse metacentric height (GM) as a stability measure and novel methods for GM estimation. 7074 The largest and the most homogenous group of papers, consisting of 11 publications, relate to methods for parametric roll detection. 7585 Another group of ten documents mainly cover studies on the complex motions of a ship, including the examination of her vulnerability to dynamic phenomena identified as dangerous.…”

“…The simplest approach 69 can be utilized only in harbor conditions to evaluate the stability conditions of a ship after cargo operations. Some significantly more advanced works achieve a robust detection of transverse stability changes in near real-time adopting signal processing methods 71 in order to estimate the natural roll frequency along with GM and their variations. To this end, a one-degree-of-freedom equation is implemented, and the roll time series are processed.…”

“…A key component for such a system is a monitoring and detection system, to give an early warning. Such early warning systems have already been developed for ships [51][52][53][54][55][56][57], enabling the crew to take corrective measures such as speed and/or course changes to avoid the occurrence of parametric roll. However, to date, no such early warning system has been developed for a WEC.…”

“…Santiago et al [27] estimated the stability of fishing vessels based on the analysis of roll motion and the mass moment of inertia. The stability monitoring system estimated the GM of fishing vessels using the measured roll angle [28]. Chen et al [29] used a machine-learning algorithm to efficiently detect the unknown parameters of a ship motion model.…”
