Real-Time Control Strategy of Energy Storage Systems for Renewable Energy Sources Exploitation

Abstract: An optimal energy storage system (ESS) management procedure devoted to full renewable energy sources (RESs) exploitation is presented in this paper. It consists of an appropriate scheduling procedure and a real-time control strategy, which both aim to increase the RES penetration level as much as possible. In particular, the one-day-ahead scheduling procedure synthesizes the combined RES-ESS energy production profile with the aim of minimizing the RES energy production curtailments by means of ESS energy buffe… Show more

“…In the first case, the maximum-capacity bidding plan was performed, the second case used the optimal scheduling algorithm, and the third case applied the real-time SOC management algorithm to the optimal scheduling algorithm. The PSCAD/EMTDC (Manitoba HVDC Research Centre, Winnipeg, MB, Canada) was used to confirm the SOC changes using Equation (12) when the ESS performed frequency regulation in a real-time operation. The actual AGC signal data in the PJM on 5 September 2013 were used to calculate the SOC in real-time.…”

“…In [11], the authors presented the feasibility of an ESS for the operation of an island AC microgrid with photovoltaic generation. In [12], the authors proposed an ESS management algorithm for full renewable energy source (RES) exploitation. This algorithm was shown to minimize the curtailment of RES energy generation through energy buffering and forecasting error compensation by an ESS.…”

“…The EMS optimization criterion can be satisfied by using a number of optimization algorithms [5,103,107], which can be carried out in advance and/or in real-time depending on the kind of services to provide [108]. The most important optimization algorithms are summed up in Table 1; each of these presents advantages and drawbacks, thus its employment is strictly related to the specific optimization criterion and inherent features of the system to optimize.…”

“…Therefore, an efficient storage system must be applied to increase the total efficiency, improving energy management or to bridge the mismatch between energy production and demand, common in renewable systems [4,5]. Several technologies are available depending on the kind of energy that needs to be stored [6][7][8][9][10].…”
