Real-time Computer-based Simulation as an Intervention in Aerodynamics Education

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to conduct an experiment where simulation was used as an instructional strategy and potential intervention for improved student posttest performance in an aeronautical science aerodynamics class. The experiment was conducted in two sections of a pilot aerodynamics course, where one section served as the control group, and the other section the treatment group. A quasi-experimental research design was used to examine the influence of simulation on posttest performance and motivat… Show more

“…HFPS has been in use for many decades in multiple disciplines such as aviation and management (Bienefeld & Grote, 2014;Rigby, 2015;Tomczyk, 2010), health professions (Chopra et al, 1994;Hussain et al, 2016;King et al, 2016;Rogers et al, 2000), as well as airport mass casualty emergency response teams (Lawrence, 2016). The phrase psychologically safe learning environment does not appear in the literature; however, when broken into psychological safety and safe learning environment, more literature is found.…”

“…The force balance, which is a fundamental part of any wind tunnel testing, allows students to conduct force and moment measurements and learn from their graphical visualization. Rigby's study included simulations in the instructional plan which can lead to improvement in students' performance in aerodynamics and applied aerodynamics (Rigby, 2015). Hands-on learning through wind tunnel experiments can improve the students' theoretical knowledge and provide them with an opportunity to analyze the aerodynamic forces measured by the force balance.…”
