Real-time computed tomography fluoroscopy-guided solitary lung tumor model in a rabbit

Abstract: Preclinical studies of lung cancer require suitable large-animal models to allow evaluation and development of surgical and interventional techniques. We assessed the feasibility and safety of a novel rabbit lung cancer model of solitary tumors, in which real-time computed tomography fluoroscopy is used to guide inoculation of VX2 carcinoma single-cell suspensions. Thirty-eight rabbits were divided into four groups according to the volume of the VX2 tissue or cell suspension, the volume of lipiodol, the volume… Show more

“…For the establishment of the rabbit orthotopic VX2 lung tumor model, the VX2 tumor cell/matrigel/lipiodol mixture was directly injected to the lateral chest region using computed tomography (CT, Brillance 64; Philips, Amsterdam, The Netherlands)-guided interventional techniques [35]. In brief, a 26-gauge needle was inserted into the peripheral lung region under the guidance of real-time CT fluoroscopy images after the administration of local anesthesia.…”

“…Still, in practice, this method often fails to obtain a tumor model of stable size and location (Lee et al, 2009). Choi et al (2017) developed a novel technique for creating a solitary VX-2 lung tumor in a rabbit lung cancer model. The technique involves inoculating a lipiodoland Matrigel-containing tumor cell suspension into rabbits using a small needle under real-time CT fluoroscopy guidance.…”

“…The novel method is an easy and safe method for successfully forming VX-2 solitary lung tumors in rabbits. This model will help surgical practice and interventional radiology studies of lung cancers (Choi et al, 2017).…”
