Real Part of thepp,pd, andpnForward Scattering Amplitudes from 50 to 400 GeV

Abstract: Proton-proton and proton-deuteron elastic scattering has been measured for incident laboratory energy from 50 to 400 GeV; minimum |*| values were, for p-p, 0.0005 (GeV/ c) 2 , and for p-d, 0.0008 (GeV/c) 2 . From the differential cross sections we have determined the ratios of the real to imaginary parts of the forward scattering amplitude, ppp and p pd , for p-p and p-d scattering. Using a Glauber approach and a sum-of-exponentials form factor we obtain p pn for p-n scattering.Dubna,

“…Experiments from Refs. [53][54][55] instance at E lab = 240 GeV, σ tot = 73.77 ± 0.4 mb, to be compared with the experimental value 74.42 ± 0.53 mb [52] This result confirms that our basic Fermi interaction between quarks obtained in the elastic proton case, where we have a system made of 4u + 2d, remains valid for this light nucleus scattering where now it contains 5u + 4d. …”

“…The experimental data [53][54][55] cover the energy range 40 ≤ p lab ≤ 397 GeV and the momentum transfer range 0.00077 ≤ |t| ≤ 0.2435 GeV 2 [53][54][55]. Of course, the energy domain is more limited than in the p p reaction, and the momentum transfer covers only low |t| values; nevertheless, we find it interesting to check the validity of our assumption on the universality of the thermodynamical potentials in this case.…”

“…(5) and diminishes the above estimates of ρ 0 . It is especially large in the models [3,11,12], where it exceeds even the minimum of the cross section at tens of GeV, comparatively small in [10,14,15,16], and is absent in [17].…”

“…The old version [11] predicts too high value of 127 mb for the total cross section at 7 TeV. It has been used in extrapolation 4 of [2], and gave rise to a maximum and then to somewhat faster decrease of ρ 0 with energy but its values are still a little bit large.…”
