This study presents the Weichselian stratigraphy on Kriegers Flak in the southwestern Baltic Sea, and correlates it to new sections in southernmost Sweden and to previously published stratigraphic sequences from SW Skåne. A total of four Weichselian advances are identified based on our correlations. The oldest till, observed only on Kriegers Flak, is dated to the Early or Middle Weichselian and tentatively correlated to the Ristinge advance, previously identified in Denmark. It is overlain by three interstadial sediment units, starting with brackish clay and followed by terrestrial and lacustrine deposits, which have been dated to 42–36 ka, and finally by glaciolacustrine clay dated to 28.5–26 ka. After 30 ka, the Fennoscandian ice sheet advanced through the Baltic Basin and into the coastal areas of southernmost Sweden where the Allarp Till was deposited, followed by a deglaciation sequence. The uppermost tills, the Dalby Till and the Lund till, were deposited during the LGM advance and the subsequent re‐advances through the Baltic Basin. Based on the new evidence it has been possible to identify and date a Middle and Late Weichselian till succession in southern Sweden and provide a strong correlation to the established glacial stratigraphies in Sweden and Denmark.

2005. Ice-cored drumlins at the surge-type glacier Brúarjö kull, Iceland: a transitional-state landform.ABSTRACT: This paper presents data on a glacial landform that, to our knowledge, has not previously been described in the literature: the ice-cored drumlin. The study area is the forefield of the surge-type glacier Brú arjö kull at the northeastern margin of the Vatnajö kull ice cap, East Iceland. Based on sedimentological field investigations and aerial photograph interpretation, a qualitative model for the formation of ice-cored drumlins is proposed. The drumlin core consists of stagnant glacier ice from a previous advance and bubbly ice formed by snowdrifts, which were incorporated during the most recent advance-the 1963-64 surge. This advance deposited a mantle of basal till and streamlined the ice-cored moraines. Till deformation and deposition on the drumlin ice-core is facilitated by a substratum of low-permeability ice-cored moraines.In the present climate, the ice-core is subject to melting and the drumlin landform will degrade. The ongoing melting of the core and re-sedimentation of the till cover cause the originally streamlined subglacial landform to develop into a patch of hummocky moraine surrounded by a basal till sheet. Thus, ice-cored drumlins are a transitional-state landform in the surging glacier landsystem at Brú arjö kull rather than a 'final' landform.

“…Two lower Baltic ice advances are commonly associated with Baltic Ice Streamthe pre-LGM Old Baltic Advance (c. 35-33 ka BP) and the post-LGM Young Baltic Advance (c. 19-17 ka;Houmark-Nielsen & Kjaer 2003). In Denmark and southern Sweden, the Young Baltic Advance can be further separated into two minor advances or phases; the East Jylland Advance was the furthest westward advance of Young Baltic ice, which was shortly followed by the Baelthav Advance, which in southwesternmost Sk ane was associated with ice flow from the SW, but appears to have terminated 10 km short of the study site (Malmberg Persson & Lagerlund 1990;Ringberg 2003). Herein, we employ anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) to investigate the temporal evolution of ice flow and bed conditions associated with one or more advances of Baltic ice into Sk ane, southern Sweden, as preserved in the till fabric of one stratigraphical section.…”

Herein we report on the results of an anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) fabric case‐study of two Late Weichselian tills exposed in a bedrock quarry in Dalby, Skåne, southern Sweden. The region possesses a complex glacial history, reflecting alternating and interacting advances of the main body of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet (SIS) and its ice lobes from the Baltic basin, perhaps driven by streaming ice. AMS till fabrics are robust indicators of ice‐flow history and till kinematics, and provide a unique tool to investigate till kinematics within and amongst till units. The till section investigated here contains ~8 m of the Dalby Till – a dark grey silt‐clay rich till deposited during one or more Baltic advance – overlain by ~1.5 m of the regional surface diamicton. AMS fabrics within the lower part of the Dalby Till conform to the regional surface fluting, and reflect sustained flow from the ENE with progressive increases in basal strain. A boulder‐rich horizon approximately 3 m from the base of the till marks a restricted excursion in till fabric direction, fabric strength and style of strain. Ice flow is from the SW and W in the upper section. We interpret these fabrics to record shifting ice flow and bed conditions at the margins of the Young Baltic Advance ice lobe in southern Sweden, prior to a short‐lived re‐advance of the main body of the SIS over mainland Sweden recorded by the surface diamicton.
